I think they are a great idea especially when combined with a digital copy for you media player. Most people don't have a blu ray player in a second room where they may wish to watch a film so a DVD is useful.
Very handy for the kids films. For instance, with 'Ice Age 3' we can watch the BR at our place but take the DVD to Granny's house which means happy kids which, generally, means happy parents.

I don't mind these except when the only choice is the 'triple pack' (DVD, BD and digital copy) for which the price is a premium and an excuse to charge it.
Sometimes there is no single disc version at a 'reduced' price.

It appears we're being charged for a DVD, etc. whether we want them or not.
