I`m a bit worried that my Grado SR60s may be blown. At certain frequencies, the sound from the left ear is quite distorted. I`m listening to a Denon DM31. Could it be the Denon? I`ve noticed it the most on a couple of Nora Jones albums. I`m going to listen to a different source and compare, but, in the meantime, has anyone else had a similar problem? I can`t imagine that I`ve done any damage to the phones - I only have the volume turned up to 15 or 16 on the Denon, max.

Hi daveyjay. I was worried that my Grados had blown, I was getting distortion that was an unwlecome zingy, buzz. But it was only with certain albums, most noticeably Radiohead and the first few tracks of 'Kid A'. I took them to my parents and tried them though their huge Pioneer stack system and the distortion was there, but much less so. In the end it was not the phones at all, but my ipod and its EQ settings. I was using jazz for everything, which was too bright. I have been customising the EQ settings for different albums, especially those producing distortion e.g Duffy and 'Rockfield', was on jazz and is now on accoustic. The distortion has gone.

You say the distortion is through one ear. That does suggest a fault. But, if your Grados sound fine plugged in elsewhere then look to the source. It could well be the case that on a revealing, bright system, poorly recorded music produces distortions.

Hello idc. Thanks for the reply. I`m going to do some testing over the weekend. Like you say, the fact that it`s only one ear does suggest that something is amiss, which is worrying. If the left ear is damaged, I`m well and truely cheesed off - I`ve only had the `phones for a few months. I`m using the sound direct setting on the Denon, so the treble and bass circuitry is bypassed, so I can count that out of the equation. I`m thinking it can`t be the recording quality of the albums, as they are all quite recent productions.

Hopefully they will be within a guarantee period and you can just get an exchange.

The sound direct setting could be the problem. My experience with my ipod is that tone controls are there to be used to remove problems with treble, bass etc. Surely better to use tone controls than to suffer distortion?

New or old, some recordings are just bad. Check out this previous post http://community.whathifi.com/forums/t/206151.aspx for four pages of poorly produced music.
