Best type of speakers for small room

Sorry if some of my questions will sound obvious or basic but this is the first time I've really given more thought than just sticking a system in the corner and using it.

My living room is pretty small, basically a square about 7m by 7m.

I'm just wondering if the more experienced would recommend a certain type of speaker? Shelf or freestanding? I do like to have my music loud when the chances arises and like to have it playing when I'm out working in the garden.

I've read so much on here lately and understand the quality of the system is important and I'm going to be upgrading as I go along and find things I can afford and improve what I already have.

I like to listen to things like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, DavI'd Bowie, Black Sabbath.....

My budget would be about upto £250 at the moment. I've been watching things on ebay but not sure what the best type for me would be.

Sorry for going on

You are right. I actually meant to write 7m ×7m

I was also messaging someone about a job saying I could be there at 9am lol....guess I can't multi task

my room is small 4.20mx3.50m ; your room is 22ft sq ,i would call that large. my small room is bad for sound, bass issues, but i think you would be ok with floorstanders

Thank you.

I've been looking on ebay at some speakers and see some I like they were Mission ones.

My current speakers I don't like they are Wharfedale AT400

I would consider 7x7m a big enough room. Maybe it's just my speaker types, but I have never been quite able to get the same filling sound out of smaller speakers that floorstanders give.

Have a look at the review section here, there's a set of Tannoys eclipse 3s review, they are slightly out of your budget, but at 300 they are new with warranty

Indeed, that's a large room by modern standards. Look for floorstanding speakers as these will save you some money because if you went for standmounts you would need to spend out on some decent stands to put them on.

Avoid putting any speakers, in this sort of budget, on a shelf.

I'm not sure you can get real quality floorstanders for £250, even s/hand is pushing the envelope.

I think the OP will need to 'up' his budget to around £700-800 IMHO.

Possibly true, I guess it's going to depend on the OPs definition of quality. The same argument is going to apply to standmounts by the time you factor in a fair amount for the stands themselves.

You can get quality floorstanders on eBay now and again if you know what you are looking for, but does the OP?

P.S.: There's a pair of Royd Abbot's on there at the moment for £225, I always rated these.

Sadly no I don't really know what I'm looking for which is why I knew it best to ask for advice.

I could up my budget a bit but not to £700-800

Realistically I could go to £400. I am a married man with daughters after all. It's expensive being surrounded by females lol

Royd Abbott's it is then. ;-)

Just to let you know, and these are by no means the speakers I'm looking for for the room, I've just bought, as they were only £20, a set of Maurdant Short MS25 speakers. For £20 I just throught I'd snap them up as that's cheap.

Not a bad price, let us know how you get on with them.

You should live in denmark, half off Q Acoustics 2000, where you can get a pair of 2050i's for 316 £ including delivery (in denmark)
