Hi all

I was all set to buy the Panny 37PX80 until I heard it was not great for SD football. Any help on choosing a set would be much appreciated. Im looking for 32" to 37". Im not bothered whether its LCD or plasma (just which ever is going to be best). I have Sky but not upgraded to HD yet. Sound is not an issue as I have a decent home cinema kit.

Many thanks

Nothing wrong with the Panny. It wouldnt get so many best buy recommendations if there was.

The problem with football is mainly ITV's transmission, which is low bit rate and loooks awfull. But it will look the same on any TV (even a Pioneer!)

SKY sports is the best (I view it on SD via a cable box), BBC football is good.

BBC HD football is very good indeed. Looking forward to Wimbledon on HD.

In general, plasmas are better than LCDs for motion handling. But no TV can cope with a cr*p signal.

I have watched a lot of sport on my Panny 37px80 and have to say its a great picture with only rare smearing from Sky Sport (on SD). I can't comment on the football (poufs game and all that) but agree that ITVs coverage of the Grand Prix is atrocious and it is prob this that has coloured (?) others attitudes.

I watched England being taught a lesson by the Kiwis and not a single flaw ruined my experience. Which meant the rubbish came from the players, who'd been out for a spit roast and didn't get in til late. (We still have a lot to learn from football)

Go for the Panny and enjoy. Or, (getting spanner out and aiming at the works) Digital Direct will have the Sony 40w4000 at 900 quid delivered on the 16th July. Mmmmm ?

Alternatively, look at digitaldirect.co.uk (In stock too) and £575 will buy you the 42" version of the tv you were interested in (TH 42PX80).

I have just bought one recently, and its good for football on BBC1, but not so good on ITV via freeview built into tv (awful signal they broadcast, and not the tv's fault!!)

Hope that helps.........

I must admit, im a more than a bit interested in th 42PX80 at that price. However I have read conflicting advice about viewing distances, I think the guide on this website says for 42" (I could be wrong on this, I read it a while ago) you should sit at least 4-5m away, but I have read other people saying they sit much closer than this. Basically I sit about 2-2.5m away and watch only SD tv and upscaled DVDs, would this be too close for a 42" (or even a 37" for that matter)?

Thanks again

Check your viewing distances in the shops, but 8ft (2.4m) should be OK for SD on a 42"

The 42PX80 is over £600 with delivery.

There is a cheaper (bottom of the range) 42PX8 at £525 from Empire Direct. Just 2 HDMI, no PC input, lower contrast, not quite so good PQ.
