I posted here a few weeks ago, when I was thinking about upgrading my Cyrus 8 system.

In the end I splashed the cash a bit, and have bought a Leema Antila IIs CD player, and a Chord CPM 2650 integrated amp. I'll still be using my iPod (lossless files) via an Onkyo dock and Arcam rDAC.

My current speakers are ATC SCM 11, but they may not be doing full justice to the new CD player and amp. In any case, I'd like to upgrade them, and have a budget around the £1500 range.

Musical tastes are pretty much anything except classical. If it helps, one of my reference tracks for demo-ing is Goldfrapp's Strict Machine. I like something which really does justice to the bassline. Also like speakers which really project vocals, and can do justice to 'big band' type music (e.g. Jools Holland).

I have two young children so am rarely able to really crank the volume up. Ideally I need speakers which can really 'project' the music even at relatively low volumes. Also the listening room is a decent size at 5 metres by 4.5 metres, so a good soundstage would be nice.

This probably suggests floorstanders, although I'm slightly reluctant to have anything with drivers reasonably close to the floor as they'll be a temptation for my 4 year old and 1 year old. Still, keeping the grilles on the front will probably help.

For standmounts the B and W PM1 seem very well regarded. For floorstanders the likes of the Spendor A6.

Any thoughts?

My nearest decent hi fi shop for demo purposes is a Sevenoaks, but I can go further if necessary (I live in Colchester).

Hi,

I believe from what I've read the Chord amps can be a bit on the forward side, so I wouldn't expect the ATC to be a good match.

I think you are looking in the right area for replacements, Spendor and B&W would certainly do an admirable job and the 800 series appears to be highly thought of with Chord.

You might even like to try Harbeth... not too disimillar from Spendor, just that bit more refined.... Radlet Audio isn't a million miles from you and Dave the owner would gladly demo you some.

If you are interested in Spendor A6 then Martins HiFi in Norwich have a pair ex demo ones for sale for £1799. I was in the shop a couple of weeks ago and both saw and heard the very speakers in question and can verify they are immaculate. Sound very good too!

Is that Sevenoaks in Witham, if so I went there a few weeks ago, there room is about the same size as yours I think but I found it not very good, could not get any decent sound in there with some quite good gear. I tried the Kefs LS50s which maybe worth hearing as some say they are the best stand mounts under £2,000.

Yes have alook at Radlett, limited range, have value amps.

Could try Rayleigh hifi but I found their range not to inc. much of interest to me. But they have B&W, Rega and Neat.
