I appreciate that life is going HD but at the moment we still have only SD, (though Sky +), capability.

We were looking to replace our existing 36" Sony CRT TV with a new 40"-46" set. The only thing is the quality of picture on SD can be variable from the sets I've seen.

What sets would offer the best viewing on SD with the capability of a good HD picture in the future, or should we stick with our CRT until we upgrade the rest of the system to HD, BlueRay etc.

Just saw the new Toshiba ZV which looked promising, but not seen a full review yet.

Any thoughts

Thanks

Most people on these forums reccomend plasma over lcd for SD generally and from what I've seen I'd have to agree too. The pioneer plasmas are supposed to be the best for everything incl SD but are expensive, on a more meagre budget Panasonic's PX range are superb with SD and pretty good with HD probably due to the fact that they are only HD ready rather than full HD.

I just took delivery of a Panasonic 42PZ80B and it is very impressive with SD, better than I had hoped. I have good strong Freeview signal which most showrooms do not, which probably accounts for it exceeding my expectations based on showroom viewing.

I'd definitely recommend the panasonic plasmas. I picked up the37px80 at Christmas which replaced a pansonic 32" HD-ready from 2007 (which went to a spare room). I have compared them (both receive a strong freeview signal) and despite being larger the plasma is much better for freeview. It's also excellent for blu-ray (i sit about 2m from the screen).

It looks like the 37px80 is getting thin on the ground, but I understand 42px80 is of similar quality

Enjoy whichever screen you get and remember it's your own eyes that you must please!
