Guys

I am just starting out and have read these forums and the magazine extensively. I am looking to have a system good enough for both movies and my well loved cds

I have got the following a set of Tannoy custom f1 speakers to go with my Yamaha RX-V 461DAB amp and Mission E3 ASR Subwoofers

The sound seems drowned by the sub and was wondering if there are subs ot there that could improve my sound. Also, woul it be better to change the receiver?

I am looking to spenabout £250 on the sub or receiver whichever needs replacing. I have put a number of forums on this topic since 2008 but no one has come to my aid.

CAN SOMEONE HELP PLEASE AS I CANNOT ENJOY MY MUSIC.

THANKS

Hi shnicks, welcome.

Getting great music from a full home cinema setup tends to be expensive and involve a lot of equipment. If music is more important than movies, then you will be much happier addressing the two issue separately.

What I would do is focus on building a great 2 channel music system that is not used at all for movies. A budget system can be extremely good with current products available.

Then, buy a cheap solution for improved movie sound. I like the idea of soundbars that greatly improve movie sound. A soundbar and a cheap sub can be very good for movies. Use this as a movie solution. Spend your primary budget on the 2 channel music system. Trying to make one system do both well sometimes can result in neither.

with no idea what colours/styles and what your living is like.

I think something on the lines of the onkyo sksht528 5.1 package is good and that would be your home cinema sorted. That would leave £75 which you can get a second hand amp/cd player off ebay to get you buy and then in the next 2 years look at upgrading the av amp and then you pick some bargin bits of hifi kit up.

this is imo and i do agree that you need to try and set up an av set up and a hifi setup. your f1's will do a good job as hifi speakers.

the reason im saying getting a 5.1 kit is the sub and speakers tend to work well, as you wont hear the sub over the speakers. But if you wont to keep music and av on the same amp sony do some good av amps for less than £200 and then you could try and get the centre to go with you fronts. And then maybe lose the sub and save for a tannoy one to go with your speakers. Movies will still sound good with no sub for now. Or with the new amp you may find the sub sounds better. I am saying upgrading your amp but i have no idea how good you amp is at the moment.

Is that amp a home cinema one? How many speakers do you use for movie duties?

My priority is music also. If it were me, i would look to improve there, even if it meant, say, selling your amp and getting a better 2 channel one, then thinking about home cinema later. Maybe even play movies through an improved stere setup to begin with.

Though that sounds reasonable too. Something lke the Sony STR-DH800 maybe.
