I am - but they're sounding SO good that my iPod deserves them, too.

So, in a dramatic - and possibly foolish - flourish, I deleted my entire Beatles collection from iTunes. They were only ever lower bitrate rips from the early days of MP3... so took up about the same size as one of the remastered albums in Lossless!

"If you want to live in a backwards world with everything sucked back into a narrow soundfield, good for you. Perhaps you should also get rid of your freeview and buy a portable black and white TV etc.

The Beatles did not obsess over every detail - they worked far too fast for that - and neither should we.

I look forward to the angry replies but seriously. Just play the things side by side and stop talking nonsense.". Amazon reviewer.

LOL, seriously, this guy is talking out of his what and where?

Obviously, that's why respected mastering engineers with decades in the industry are coming out and (rightly) panelling the trend to over EQ and limit everything these days. George Marino, Steve Hoffman, Barry Diament and the rest...I guess they're talking out their hats.

That is why there is a big hoohah about these reissues; we don't want another Genesis SACD debacle, so this Amazon contributor/"reviewer" should maybe wise up a little. There's a pretty good reason some music fans are jumping up and down over this and it's not because this latest batch of reissues has "remaster" plastered all over them.

One other thing; unless the stereo treatment's been applied more sympathetically than previous efforts, stick with the mono. I have the 2LP Beatles 62-66 (in red vinyl!) and it sounds like an amateur did it.

You gotta admire the EMI recording engineers from the 60s, managing to capture such brilliant recordings, working with pretty basic kit. What absolute stars...

i don't care how good the mono releases are, in this day and age I could never just listen to one channel no matter how good is was!

You don't need to be an expert to know what sounds good and what's mastered poorly - the word remastered should not automatically put you off - just trust your ears

Very true, it's just that a lot of newer stuff sounds badly done, if you know what to look for, you can find examples that put supposedly improved versions to shame. Just listening to the Pretenders first album on a WEA "Target" CD. Mind bogglingly good version. Dynamic, plenty of air and space between the instruments, the audio separation works incredibly well.

Yep, mono, two channel, it matters not, as long as it's done well, but that tends to be the point that's overlooked...

I hear what you're saying matengawhat but if you compare a really brutal stereo mix with all the vocals left and all the music right, you'd be pleasantly surprised at how much better the mono mix is.

I have The Beatles Singles box set on CD and a straight comparison of Paperback Writer in stereo and then mono would surely change your mind. That opening guitar riff sounds fulller and more powerful (as was the intention) in mono. Listening to it in stereo is painful. a tiny little riff dribbling out of the left speaker is not a ringing endorsement of the joys of stereo.

matengawhat:do the cds in the stereo box set come in jewel cases or cardboard ones

All card I believe.

Yep, they're card - but top-quality gatefold sleeves plus a booklet on each release. V.impressive.

I almost bought the Mono Box set but there was still too much of the post 1965 stuff that I am not too bothered about.

[Edit.] Sorry, forgot to say. So far they sound fan-bleed'n-tastic!

The card sleeves are limited and will be replaced in a short time (jewel cases is presume). The documentaries are only going to be on the discs in the card sleeves.

Only had chance to listen to the first three tracks off Abbey Road - and wow, it's lovely stuff. Warm, detailed and jaw droppingly smile-inducing.

The Mono Box and various stereo duplicates await. Children and chores almost put to bed. Time to play. . .

Listening to Rubber Soul - terrific detail, nice texture to vocals - sounds a bit upfront compared to my vinyl originals at the moment, bit of a shock!

Working my way from the beginning with the Mono Box and I'm staggered and rapidly becoming a worry to my wife and daughter. My repeated exclamations of "Oh, my God . . . listen to that bass/drum/guitar/voice/Paul bit/John bit. . . " are all too prevalent as I make it up to Beatles For Sale.

Several tracks along the way simply stopped me in mine. Twist & Shout was played five times on the trot as I glanced at England drubbing Croatia and imagined what Ian McDonald would make of this sonic reupholstery. Reading his description of this particular songs recording circumstances brought a moistening to my eyes.

It's all too much. . .

Purchased the Love CD after reading comments on this thread and it is fantastic, will buy a few of the re-masters but not sure which ones as I currently only have the Past Masters CD which is ok but nothing special, If you were to buy just 2 or 3 of the re-masters which ones? I am more in to acoustic/vocals than the pop stuff.

Does anyone know if the re-masters will go on to Vinyl?

Hey chebs,

Stacking your amp on top of your CD player is a bit questionable don't you think ?

Just noticed you've a sneaky wee Eastern Electric Minimax CD player there, CD! Fancy giving us a quick few lines on what you think of it? I've long been impressed by the EE kit and the CD player gets an extremely good write-up. Bit of a contemporary classic by all accounts?

Hey Bluetorric, there is a photo of yours that shows the same arrangement with your Supernait and CD5 player.

I wouldn't trouble yourself about the purists. I don't.

Further off thread but I also notice Mr.Donkey, that you've got the latest Chord DAC. I'm a DAC64 owner but would like to know what you think of the newest model.

Cheers.
