Can someone help please. My brother has a Oppo BDP-103 blu ray and a samsung 4k TV, when playing a 4k disc and you press info on TV it only shows it as 1080P? When you set the blu ray resolution output to 4k it still shows 1080P. When he connects his £110 Samsung blu ray and presses info it shows 4k? Hence it must be the Oppo blu ray. Any ideas?

"Mastered in 4K" is not 4k. Its 1080p with a wider colour gammut than normal bluray.

I would take a guess that the Samsung bluray is one of the ones that has 4k upscaling, that would explain the 4k output.

4K blu-ray players and discs won't be available for another twelve months, so if it is showing 1080p that is correct and i don't see a problem.

It might be related to where the upscaling is being performed. The Samsung player is probably not performing any upscaling (does it even upscale to 4K?), but rather the TV is upscaling the image and hence reports it as being 4K.

No, other way round, the tv will report the type of picture going into it, not what it's displaying (as it's always displaying 4k).

It doesn't matter if it shows 1080p or 4K. If the picture fills the TV screen and not just the centre 25%, the picture has been upscaled to 4K. Samsung TVs are brilliant upscalers, some of the best I've seen. So I won't worry who's doing the upscaling.

Thank you Big Boss, I appreciate your answer but still confused a little. Why when you connect the samsung blu ray and select info on the samsung TV does it show a different (4k) resolution to when the oppo is connected and it shows 1080p even when the 4k output is selected? Don't forget I don't have the technical ability that you have!

I don't think you should worry at all. If a 4K TV displays 1080p picture without upscaling, the picture will only fill the centre 25% of the TV.

Upscaling means these pixels are duplicated 4 times by a clever algorithm so the picture fills the screen. So if the picture fills the screen, it has been upscaled to 4K. If Oppo doesn't upscale the picture, Samsung TV will.
