I would certainly consider slotting in a small musical sub unit from SVS or Velodyne to pitch in below 41hz (or what ever the lower register of the Focus 110a's are). Problem for most is in properly integrating a sub for both phase and room EQ, without having to faff around with complex metering equipment.
I think AVI seem to provoke quite a lot of ill-feeling by delivering a few too many unecessary sideswipes at other hi fi manufacturers. They are a two man band, outsourcing manufacturer and marketing themselves on line and there is nothing wrong with that, although I'd have reservations around long term support with buying expensive (it is for me) kit from a small company whose MD is ready to retire. A few vocal AVI fans do seem to have cut a swathe across the web of hi fi forums out there, possibly taking no prisoners and failing to convince many bar the already-converted to their philosophy and product.
The ADM 9.1s are an achievement in packaging and did not sound bad, just thin in bass to my ears. And my ears are king. I have not heard the Focus 110 actives, but have heard the passives, which are a very pleasant and engaging listen with enough weight for rock/pop sounds.
It seems inevitable that another will soon stick a DAC in the box plus the active crossover and internal power amp to offer an alternative to 9.1s, since this seems to be a lucrative space in the market.
It does seem to be a challenge to audition the Focus 110a's, and here AVI have the bases covered.
How about an active domestic speaker round up test Editor? Not every one wants industrial looking studio active nearfield monitors in their lounge.
