I am buying the 803s for front, HTM3 in center and ASW825 as a sub. Anyone has a view if the 805s will work as surrounds in terms of matching the fronts? Am concerned about overall cohesion.

Thank you in advance.

The cohesion will be excellent, what are your alternatives out of interest, another pair of 803s? 804s? Both are a massive step up in price for rear channels.

thank you for your answer octopo.

i was originally getting 805s for both front and back but demo'd the 803s and there were vastly superior with music (not surprisingly). my alternative is actually going back to 8053s all around since my main use is home cinema. basically if i can have better stereo with the 803s without sacrificing cohesion and dynamics i will go for them with 805s in the back. otherwise i would stick with 805s all around.

804s and 803s in the back are difficult because of room setup but also because i have already blown my budget to bits!

I think you'll be fine. In absolute terms, for 100% cohesion in sound, you should have the same speaker for all points, even the centre. This is pretty unpractical in most HC setups and I'd say it's more common than not that people have different rears from the same family of speakers in order to save money - I use B&W 685s for my fronts and due to space limitations behind me, I use B&W M1s for the rears and it all works very well together.
The 803s and the 805s share the same technology, drivers etc. so should fit together absolutely fine I reckon.

thank you professorhat. the mid range driver on the 5s is only slightly bigger at 6.5 vs 6 on the 3s - but same impedance. in terms of sensitivity and frequency of course the difference is there. but i think your point is well taken. i am unable to demo the pacakge in the whole configuration unfortunately which would settle the issue.

may i ask what you are driving the 685s with in terms of amplification?

I have the Onkyo TX-NR905 - a stonkingly good AV receiver in my opinion! It outclasses the 685s a little, but I have to say they work wonderfully with it and I picked it up a few months ago cheap due to the anticipation of the 906 replacement.

have not had the pleasure of hearing it but i read very good things. i have the Onkyo 875 myself which I will upgrade at some point soon. i am quite happy with it but it won't do the 803s justice i don't think. thank you again for your kind feedback.

Why can't you have the DS3 for the rears? They are actually designed to be surround speakers.ÿ

ive just aquired a pair of 685s and thought of the m1 for rears but which sub?

Good question! Unfortunately, I haven't yet upgraded from old sub (REL Q150E). Whilst this is okay, I know it's the weak link in my system but I have promised to pay off my credit card before going ahead with any new purchases (well, actually, I promised that before I bought the Onkyo but couldn't resist the price!).
I'm thinking of the equivalent ASW608 or the ASW610 subs, both of which I've seen good reviews of, but I'm also tempted to check out the BK and SVS ones I've read about here. It's all theory at the moment though as I can't afford it for a while yet so not bothering to audition in case I'm tempted!
