Today's Observer reports a University of Iowa study which found that paticipants' recall of audio recordings began to decline from just four seconds of exposure, much more pronounced than for videos and touch. Reviwers' ears must be even more golden than we thought.

Perhaps they take notes.

Indeed. Or even if they don't take notes on paper/computer, words can be remembered over a lifetime. One of my old uni tutors, who's now lost most of his short-term memory, can quote vast reams of poetry that he learnt as a youngster.
