attaching a tape player to hifi (through aux L & R)

Hi

I have attached a standard tap player to the left and right aux inputs on my hi-fi with the jack attached to the ear socket of the player

I have noticed that with the jack connected properly to the tape player the sound only comes out of one speaker (albeit clearly)

If I only put the jack lead half way into the ear socket of the tape player it plays through both speakers but less clear and more muffled then it did when just playing through the one speaker.

Am I doing anything wrong - do i need a different lead?

any help is appreciated!

Depends on what you mean by a standard tape player? What you describe makes me wonder if the headphone output is only mono.
