Yesterday Argos had the Panasonic th42pz81b listed at £889. Today it's listed at £999? How is this possible, I though TVs came down in price eventually (unless you're a 42" pioneer of course) not went up. I've obviously held off from buying it way too long!?!

Supply and demand in action!

When stocks are high, retailers tend to cut prices to stimulate sales. If that works well and demand continues, they'll put the prices back up again...

Argos prices fluctuate along with the other shops. Dixons as now listed at £999, though it's £894 at Lasky's. They're probably increasing prices for a short time before launching discounts again.

Clare Newsome:Gives them a great opportunity to do the 'Was £1299, then £999, now just £850!" etc.....

Good old marketing ploy as used by companys like DFS

my opinion...but when I have been pricing plasmas during the last year Argos was ususally 25% more expensive that the cheapest available from perfectly reputeable sellers (JL, Amazon, Dixons). Just a quick check now finds
The 37px80 at 670 is 100 more than I recently paid (565 at JL),

the 46pz80 is currently on 'offer' at 1399 which is 30% more than the 50 inch is being sold on Amazon and dixons including delivery. But hey argos throw in a 50% off deal on a crappy stand :)

I am not trying to support these others firms only to point out that argos is no bargain and shouldnt be consulted as a barometer of cheap prices.

Yes, you're right Argos are not normally a cheap option. But recently, i.e. last few weeks, they have had keen prices on some TVs, e.g. 37PX80, 42PX80 and the 42PZ80 (£559, £619 and £729 respectively from memory, plus free 3yr guarantee). As the OP has said, their prices have gone back up this week.

As with all these online prices, you have to do a proper search of all the options before committing your money.

You're all lucky. Over here in Portugal all shops seems to sell all sets for roughly the same prices, so there's never any bargains to be found anywhere.

Example: between the 5 top retailers over here the 46W4500 price only fluctuates about ?30!

Yes, and be careful with Argos - I've just waited 3 weeks for my PZ80B at £709 only for them to tell me it will take (at least?!) another 3 weeks! I've cancelled the order and will look elsewhere - don't want to appear impatient - but now I am!

I was confused because at the bottom of the web page on the Argos site it said 'this price is guaranteed until...' and the date was january 09!?! I've emailed them but they have yet to reply. it seems that all these sets have gone back up across the retailers. Maybe it's Panasonic that have put their prices up?

After weeks of agonising I also ordered the PZ80B at £709 3 weeks ago with estimated 28 days delivery and got a call tonight to say they can't deliver till January! Gutted.

Now looking for a good alternative but feel I will always wonder whether the Pana would be better than whatever I buy...decisions decisions...wait or order a Sony or a Samsung....
