It seems tome that people are willing to trade/sell/upgrde theit TVs at the same rate that people in the past were devoted to tweaking and exchanging HIFI. What a disappointing trend. Is this all part of the dumbing down culture.

mmm

I don't think it's got anything to do with dumbing down, more to do with the rapid progress of technology with people wanting the most up to date models and specs - same as with computers. Sadly I can't afford to change my TV every year or every 2 years which is why I'm taking so long agonising over which to get at the moment lest it be rendered obsolete technology in 6 months.

and whatever you get, itll be on its way to obsolete pretty quickly anyway. i guess you just have to decide what you want and have the courage of your convictions. then, im afraid, stop paying attention o coverage of new technology, lest temptation gets to you. what we really need is another few years with no significant developments, like we had with crts. any chance...?

I think it is a great pity the TV technology has become like this. And I am not even sure that it is delivering fantastic results. As far as SD goes, I would not even consider any LCD TV. Look at all the time and money that has gone into that, and yet in terms of quality , I don't think watching the football on SD on LCD is better than on my old Sony CRT. In fact I think it is worse.

I know people will go on about how flat they are, and how less room they take up, but that is irrelevant to me. I want a good picture, not a piece of furniture.

Yup, cos I'm not sure what you mean. How is people upgrading their television anything to do with people tweaking and exchanging hi-fi? And even if it was, what makes this a dumbing down on culture?

I don't think tv technology is going to slow down very much over the next few years...OLED is already on the way and will no doubt be 'flavour of the month' in the near future making plasma and lcd seem positively old hat and fat ;) Think i'll hang on to my trinitron for a short while longer to see what happens as OLED evidently provides the next benchmark in terms of picture quality...
