I think the basic idea was to distance the brand a little for those US consumers who may still have had a less than comfortable relationship with buying Japanese.
Ditto Nissan/Infiniti and Honda/Acura.

Last time was when I flew back into Heathrow - got worried when a customs official beckoned me over, but it was only to say he was a WHF subscriber
. Sadly didn't get any fast-track benefits, though (that would be handy in the travelling-to-US nightmare on Tuesday)
