Are subs anti-social?

Hi,

I'm considering a B&W ASW608 to reinforce my home cinema, but am concerned it might be irritating for the neighbours.

With wooden construction floors is it inevitable that, turned up to the point that it's doing its job, a sub is going to annoy those in the flats below?

Thanks,

P

......Possibly.......depends on the neighbours, and how much they're away. :shifty:

Auralex Grammas and Granite can help; and some Subs have "night settings".

Even two Grammas in order to decouple it from the floor as much as possible.

Have you tried this.....if so, how much more effective is it than one?

I use 1.5" thick Granite under mine to good effect.

A lot must be said for the contruction of the flats your in as already touted.

I used to be in an apartment overlooking the river, on the 2nd floor, and I had at (too often a) times listened at rediculous volume levels. The system included a Tannoy TS-10 Subwoofer. I never had a single complaint and could never hear anyone else - the place was just built incredibly well with noise isolation in mind.

We are now staying with the in-laws whilst sorting out a new home; whilst here I've bought a granite plinth for my sub - will look into these Auralex Grammas, too - look like an excellent product after a quick google :)

EDIT: Auralex also make a "SUBDUDE" which seems to be tailored to the task. Cool.

Why not consider a buttkicker instead?

From Amazon review:

"Using the ButtKicker with movies feels like being at an IMAX. I was concerned I might be disturbing neighbors when I watched The Dark Knight for the first time using the ButtKicker as it was so intense. My neighbors in the apartments below me and those next door said they heard nothing."

Hi,

Many thanks for the suggestions, if I go the conventional route then something from Auralex seems perfect for a relatively small outlay.

The Buttkicker's quite intriguing though, I may see if there's anywhere nearby that I can get my butt kicked to see if I like it.

And if any of my neighbours are reading, rest assured any sub will be of the non-nuclear variety.

Thanks,

P

I'd argue that some people are antisocial.

You can use a system without a sub yet still play films and music at antisocial volume levels. Alternatively, you can be considerate and only engage the subwoofer when your neighbours are out, while remaining mindful of volume levels more generally.

I've reconsidered my usually accommodating stance on noise pollution since new neighbours moved into the flat beneath. I'm now living above an unending episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show. I don't object to bad language, but it's nice when vocabulary extends beyond **** and ****.

Hi, Just thought I would give my 2 cents - I live in a flat and have x4 velodyne HGS-18 subwoofers which I can use to effect probably 4-5 times a year - otherwise it is x2 buttkickers and headphones the rest of the time. The buttkickers are superb bits of kit and I wouldn't be without them - the thing that surprised me with them is that they really do give you a range of bass effect - its not just monotonal on / off if that makes sense, cheers, Tony
