plastic penguin:JohnDuncan:Not at all, the more money the better. I won't pre-empt drummerman's suggestion, but I'm a standmount kind of bloke, so will suggest Spendor (S3/5r), PMC (DB1i) and ProAc (Tablette Reference 8) for starters.
Surely, JD, you have to draw the line somewhere. I can understand the logic behind your suggestion but an amp is limited by the quality of its internals.
I personally would only spend around £200 either side of the cost of the amplifier. I can't see how pound for pound there would be a significant difference on what is essentially an A70? (sound quality-wise, I mean).
You'd think, yeah, but I say this because speakers are the one area where the more and more expensive the speaker I've heard, the better and better the sound (with good examples, obviously). I have heard three- and eight-grand speakers on the end of a Rega Mira and they were a revelation.
Now I'm not saying if you buy a two hundred quid amp and a four grand pair of speakers that you're sorted, I think there is a balance to be achieved, but with a Solo that's all you've got - the only thing you can do to improve it is speakers, so spend as much as you possibly can.
