Ordered at silly-o-clock when Apple started taking online orders here in UK (March 25th) and the latest shipping (not delivery) date I have is 15th April.

Very disappointed :(

Tells you everything you need to know about the product category that tablets in general and iPads in particular fit into ;)

Devoted collectors of paraphanalia queue round the block,

They battle and bitsch, for the ultimate kitsch, of a crucifix clock,

Two miniature Romans, running on rails,

Appear on the hour to bang in the nails,

Oh I've got to have one, I've got to be,

The first on my block...

Had to order online, as it's being engraved as a present.

Wouldn't it be better to engrave something less ephemeral? (Like a wrist-watch.)

In a year's time - when iPad 3 is launched - the engraving will only reduce the amount one could sell it for.

Even if the recipient never sells it, it will become unusable when the battery degrades (or Apple eventually remove support for that version).

Well the recipient is me, and the iPad 2 is a generous gift from him-indoors, whom wants to engrave something he knows i'll enjoy everyday.

As indeed he did with the iPod Touch that i'm still using three years on.

But if you want to pour cold water over his romantic gestures, go ahead

If you don't want it engraved, you can reserve one on Apple website at 9:00 pm for collection the next at one of the Apple stores. They have limited number though so you have to be quick. Reserved mine last night and picked it up lunch time today.

Oooh, update: probably just a co-incidence, but a day after I grumble EVERYWHERE about Apple's shocking service, suddenly I find out my iPad 2 has been sent. It's on its way from Holland, so here's hoping Customs don't hold it up...

Had an email from Apple last night. Regent Street store had them in stock - almost got the credit card out, but then baulked at the last minute. Watching the news about all those tax rises didn't help!

I not sure why people keep going on about degrading batteries. I have had a number of Classics, Shuffles and Touch's over the years and not one of them has had battery problem. They are still working as I usually pass on to family.

To me this is usually something that Apple knockers cite as reasons not to buy Apple products.

Clare - Lucky you. I would love an iPad, but not in a postition to get one just yet. I am envious of my friends and colleagues who have them!!

Hope you enjoy it.

I am not an Apple knocker, but lithium ion batteries do fail eventually. When this happened on my nokia phone and dell laptop, I simply bought a replacement. It would be nice if the same were possible for mp3 players etc (not just Apple) - to throw away an expensive toy like an ipod for the sake of a new battery seems criminal.

You don't have to throw away an ipod, or any other apple portable product for that matter, when the battery goes. Apple have a battery replacement service.

We haven't done a full review yet - that's going to be in the next issue.

And an update on my iPad2. According to the UPS parcel tracker, the iPad2 has left China, via Hong Kong, and has made its way to Dubai (!), where it's now been shipped to Europe.

Ah, digital technology - so much more environmentally friendly than old tech ;)
