Any body built their own DAC?

Has any body on this forum built their own DAC or know someone who has?

I'm just curious if there is much too it. I've already seen posts regarding mods so I can see that there are people with the skills. I've done a little recce on the net and not found any a - z examples.

Is it too simplistic to think that I could convert the likes of my old DV4100 Marantz into a DAC or build one with all the necessary components from scratch?

Have a look at http://www.amb.org/audio/gamma1/

You'd need to be handy with a soldering iron.

Also PJPro on here in the computer based music forum has talked a lot about making headphone amp etc.

Thanks zzgavin. Looks interesting but very challenging. If I was to build one then I would be looking for one to go beween my HTPC when built and AV amp.

The example you gave is quite small which could be handy. I would be using the SPDIF, if I could use that in tandem with it for power it would save me a plug.ÿ

Even better would be to house in the HTPC but I imagine that is not a good idea because of interference.ÿ
