Hi forum members, My brother is having problems with humming sound from his speakers. His genie 3 is connected to a phono box 2 which is then connected to his vita audio. The earth wire is connected from the turntable to the phono box. The is a large annoying humming sound coming from his speakers. We have tried several things but the humming is still there. Please can you help?

How close is the TT to the phono box? Ideally they should be adjacent. Also, try moving the TT/phono box interconnect away from all other cables and from the main amp.

The tt is adjacent to the phono box. The problem is that I took my brothers phono box to try it with mine tt at home for a week. Since bringing it back we have noticed the humming quite badly, it was not there before-I'm sure. Which makes me feel bad as I took it home for a short while. Tried what you have said but it is still there, any ideas?

Have you done the classic test of unplugging everything to make sure it's coming from the turntable? Also, what impact does disconnecting the earth have on the hum?

Yep, it is definitely coming from the turntable/phonobox connection. My question is that it was not doing it before...unless, we did not notice it...but I took it home then brought it back and it started doing it! strange indeed...but how do I stop it from humming? 🙂

Well you've already been told once in this thread and once in the previous thread were you asked the same question, disconnect the earth lead and see what difference it makes. You could try earthing it to something else. I don't know if it matters but the phono box has no earth pin in its power plug.

Yes I have been told before, but though this is the same issue, what fixed the previous issue on my system is not working on my brothers system. I have tried disconnecting the earth completely, still there is humming, tried even placing the earth on a metal part of the vita audio radio- still the same. I am running out of options here....

It might have been an idea to mention that in the first place...

Long shot, but it may be that the internal earthing connection within the phono box has come loose/off whilst in transit.

Try running a bit of cable from the outer connection of one of the phono cables to similar on the Vita - if this solves it, you need to get the phono box looked at.

gbhsi1:Thanks for adding some ideas I can actually use...

Like I said if you'd mentioned you'd tried it earlier I wouldn't have wasted my time suggesting it and with that attitude I won't bother in the future.

Hi. Not sure if it helps, but my Dual TT has captive patch leads which have a fault in them.

They can sometimes create hum through my system, nothing to do with earthing(I'm guessing). Twist them a little and the hum disappears. They really need replacing.

Are your captive or normal interconnects? Just a thought...

Hi MicroMega, I am not sure what you mean by captive patch leads- can you elaborate please?

Captive leads run directly from the tonearm (RB300, etc) with one set of connections as opposed to normal interconnects with two sets of connections

Yes, as mitch65 said. My cables from the turntable cannot be removed/upgraded, whereas with a turntable with phono socket connections can be used with standard stereo interconnects.

My brother has standard stereo interconnects. Maybe I should different interconnects instead of the one's provided by pro-ject, see if that could eliminate the problem
