Annoying headband

Hello,

Suggestions please for home headphones, mainly for TV late at night.

I have a pair of excellent AKG 701s which I like a lot.

However as I'm getting a bit thin on top and the hard almost horizontal headband does become rather a problem after a time.

So the criteria is headphones that are pretty neutral, open backed and comfortable for longish periods of time, with emphasis on the headband, and over ear please.

Does such a beast exist for £200 or less...................

Ah - the old knobbly headband!

Could never understand what AKG were thinking of when they came up with that, I tried wrapping foam and stuff round it but was never happy with the fit.

I would recommend an old favourite, the Senn HD600s - they are mostly similar sounding, with better bass extention and imaging and way more comfortable.

Ha, I read that title and thought "could he be talking about the 701?". Stupid AKG headband! It could only be about style, that and nobody with short/no hair who tried it told them the truth during testing, if there was any - it's shockingly uncomfortable.

My vote for you goes with the Beyerdynamic DT880. I'm not saying I prefer it over the HD600 as I have not tried it but it was a breath of fresh air compared to the AKG. Not saying that the AKG is bad sonic wise because it's not, it's just that for me the Beyer sound was more neutral. The AKG feels a bit too cold for my liking.

Thanks for the input chaps, very helpful.

I think that the Beyers would suit my budget better and have good reviews generally, however I'm confused about the difference between the " pro " and the " premium " models of the DT 880s.........

I've never understood these comments about the headband. I'm a little thin on top nowadays but it doesn't affect me at all, indeed if it were not for the comments I wouldn't have noticed anything at all.

Perhaps some of us are more sensitive in certain areas than others ........

Well I’m thin on top by choice and to be honest I don’t find the headband particularly uncomfortable (the earcups are another matter).

Never had to try it myself but would have thought a nice thick woolly sock would do the trick.

Just a quick report on the Beyerdynamic DT880s after a few weeks.

I can honestly say that these are the most comfortable and best sounding phones that I have ever owned and will be my phone of choice for a long time, so thanks for the feedback guys...............
