Amp line level inputs

Sorry for this newbie question but could someone clarify for me.

Is there a difference between the different inputs on an amplifier? I know a phono input has its own preamp but is there any difference between the cd, tuner, tape and MD inputs.

Generally no, but some amplifiers have a facility called something like CD Direct, which will give the CD input a simpler signal path through the circuitry, for example bypassing the input selector and tone controls.

In the absence of such a feature, though, they're all the same

Someone once told me that the tape input would be slightly better quality for whatever reason. How true this is though, I don't know.

Maybe the WHF team can have a blind A/B/X test to try this theory?
