Aiwa AP2500 record player connection

I am trying to link my very old Aiwa record player to our newish Cambridge CXA60 amplifier. The Aiwa manual tells me to simply plug in the red and white pin connectors to an amp and connect the ground connector. This doesn’t work. Do I need a preamp between the deck and my Cambridge amp? Yes, it's normally referred to as a phono stage when it is incorporated into an integrated amplifier.
You require a moving magnet phono preamplifier

If the turntable is that elderly it might benefit from a new cartridge as well.
