While the opening at the front of the Atacama rack may only be 21.5cm or thereabouts, the design does mean that the shelf above the receiver is another 3-4cm up - the support beam at the front is quite deep. So the air-space above the 875 is actually nearer 6cm or so, and as i mentioned before, there's nothing else on the double-width shelf, so there's a lot of air around the sides and rear of the receiver too.

But just to be clear I'm not saying I suggest ignoring Onkyo's air-space requirements - I'm just reporting that I've been using the 875 on this rack for about 18 months now and (taps head) touch wood there have been no problems whatsoever.

Andy H:I think I would inclined to have a larger air gap, but earlier in this thread Andrew pointed out that he has an 875 with a spacing of 21.5c, = to a 2cm gap at the top with no probs. Like I said earlier Onkyo recommended 8" enclosed and 4" open racks. Glad to see you got a replacement though.Yeah, I spotted that Andrew was only allowing about a 2cm gap (bout the same as mine) and the 875 is a more powerful amp. Had the new one running for about s hours now and it's quite warm approaching hot on top already. Will just run it I guess and see what happens. The other amp only lasted about a day before it went bang so we'll see!

Andy H:Have I got this right that you only have approximately 2cm gap between the top of your amp and the underside of the above shelf?

I do have 2 cm gap above my 606 but open to left ,right , front and back.- not a hint of high heat anywhere.

Lie most people I never really pay much attention to the first couple of pages in any instruction manuals as they usually just tell you not to clean your hifi with acid and don't poke about inside with things with a screwdriver. Am I really likely to 'blow' the amp if I don't leave sufficient air to it? I thought the worst that might happen is that some sort of thermal cut off switch might cut in to protect it? I was very surprised last night when it just went 'Bang!' (n o smoke or flashes, just Bang)

I would think yours was just a failure - it happens with any product from any brand on a one in a million (or thereabouts) basis - and not heat-related.

That's good to know! My shelf space is 210mm and the rear corner of the amp dticks out of the back of the rack coz of the depth of the thing! The first literally just went Bang! at 1 in the morning.......nearly woke me up! (Yeah, I was sat watching a boring movie at the time). How long have you had yours and is there a 'run in' period?
