I am about to acquire a new Onkyo TX8020 ( 200 usd stereo amp, no digital input) and a chromecast audio to add to a pair of Cabasse Floorstanders from mid 90's.... Is it worth considering adding a DAC between the CCA and the amp? connection to amp is via RCA inputs only. If it's worth doing, what DAC would be matching that entry -level budget hi-fi set up?

thanks!

Chromecast Audio has a pretty decent DAC built in, so try it first before thinking of splashing out more on a separate unit.

If you do go for a separate DAC, there is no need to go above about £50 as the differences will be small with your system. (Pop to a few dealers and have a listen to some)

If looks aren’t important to you, then also visit your local pro music shop, as you will be able to get a DAC at a fraction of the price of a Hi Fi badged DAC with the same or better quality.

Hope this helps

Thanks BIll, I'll try the music shop option. I have a USB dragonfly for my laptop use and it makes a difference, that's why I am exploring this idea for the CCA. The budget line you mentioned is what I have in mind. Will look into that. Cheers,

You've got a Dragonfly? Well, can't you compare Dragonfly with Chromecast? People say that the Mac has a decent DAC. Well, I think the DAC in the Chromecast is significantly better. I'd be surprised if you could get much better for £50, but would be delighted to know what device achieves this!
