I am just about to move into a new build flat, that already has a sky+ adaptor in the wall in the living room.

thing is my home cinema where i want sky HD is in the bedroom, will they happily supply sky HD to the bedroom even though there are sockets in the living room that i dont wanna use?

and if i dont get BT in before sky, can i hook my sky up to a phoneline afterwards once bt are in?

thanks

as its a new build flat its almost certain that the flats have a communal system! in which case if the points are in a different room and thats the only points then it will mean running cables from those points to your ht+tv set up in the other room.

as for the phone line, sky wont install the system until your phone line is working i'm afraid... well actually thats not strictly true, you can have sky installed without a phone line, but theres an extra one off charge for the priveledge(not sure how much it is nowdays) and without it you wont be able to order box office or anytime films etc

I'm in the same situation, but I'm only living in the flat for a year or so, so don't want to change things around.

The only option I have would be to go into the loft and cut the incoming cables there, before they go down into the living room. Then I could have used an adaptor (female to female coupler type thing) and ran new cables elsewhere. If I wanted Sky back in the living room, I could just have re-joined the original cabling.

I know that putting an adaptor/coupler in affects the signal a little, but I don't imagine it's much worse than a faceplate?

it does affect the signal slightly yes but it is neligable and as you said no worse than a face plate. though in an ideal situation you wouldn't use face plates either, for best results should be a continous cable run from dish to stb.

Thanks for clarification Dave, kinda thought that would be the way.

Maybe an option for the OP then, if he can access the incoming cables. Mine just run through the loft, before going down a bit of trunking into the living room. I guess maybe I'm lucky in this regard, as our flat is at the top of the building, whereas if you live lower in the block you may not have access to your cables.

yeah if he's in the same situation as you would be a possibilty, but if not it would mean running from the points he already has, which could be an issue as building management/ freeholder in all likelyhood won't allow running cables externally and would mean running them internally which isnt ideal if you cant hide them.

tbh i'd run them yourself. if its a sky installer that turns up and they've got to run cables through internal wall's and under kitchen units etc they may well use it as an excuse not to do the install. if it's a sub-contractor they'll be more inclined just to do it as if they dont do the install they dont get paid!

again as for the phoneline, if its a new install then the line must be active before they'll install sky, unless as mentioned before you pay a one off charge not to connect it.

if you already have sky and your just moving home and taking your box with you should get away with it. if you've had it more than 12months its out of contract so phone doesn't have to be connected anyway.
