I got rid of all but the basic SKY package, including HD, a couple of months ago. I couldn't believe I was paying £800 per year for TV, so I gave it the elbow.

Anyway, I was watching the FA cup semi-final on ITV, on Saturday. The picture was abysmal (as it always seems to be on ITV sd), so I tried ITV HD. Suprisingly, it worked. So did BBC HD and Channel 4 HD. HD viewing without having to pay money-grabbing Murdoch the tenner a month for SKY HD.

Nice.

Enough of your condescending tone. I knew that related to SD channels, but I thought HD would be different, as I bet many others would, too.

That's very interesting.

Maybe the thinking is this way you're more likely to be tempted to upgrade to a package of some sort in the future. As apposed to ditching the Sky box altogether and going Freeview HD via which you'd get BBC/ITV/CH4 HD anyway?

Yes, that was my understanding too. £10 p/month extra for HD no matter what package you have.

BBC HD, ITV HD and LUXE TV HD are all FTA (Free To Air) channels, i.e un-encryted,so are viewable on any Freesat HD, Sky HD or any generic/non platform specific HD receiver.

4 HD, along with Five(Sky only),Fiver,Five USA and their + 1's,Sky 3,Viva and a few others i wont mention are FTV (Free to View) which as the name implies, are free, but use low level encrytion, so require a Sky box with a viewing card.

Though it doesn't matter whether it's an ex-subscription card (so long as it's current, i.e a white card atm), a Freesat From Sky card or a current subscription card,obviously....

Exactly. The footy was the only thing I was missing about HD. Now I know I can still watch champions league / FA cup and, of course, The WORLD CUP in HD, for nought.
