I am looking for a new DVD whch also sounds good musically as I haven't the budget or room for separates, I was looking at the Marantz 6001, but a dealer in Tottenham Court Road is trying to convince me to go for the Yamaha DVD S 2700, "usually £1000 but now on offer at £250, brand new and two year warranty", saying it is a best buy and much better than my choice. I went home to search for reviews for the Yamaha but can't find any! Does anyone know anything about it, and is it really a better buy than the Marantz? thanks

I think the model is the S5270. Yamaha call it their entry level dvd player so there is no way it has ever cost £1000!!!!

I have this one myself and took advantage of the very same deal and do not regret it. It is the real deal, i.e the 2700 btw. only things to complain about is that the sound, while excellent quality is quieter than many other players i have heard. also,if im really picky, pan scans are not always absolutely smooth this depends a lot on your tv though. The build quality and upscaling is great though, I watch it on a 1920x1080 panel so its really pushed. looks very composed never any blocking, no match for blu ray, mind but seated a few meters back i cant tell the difference. Easily made multiregion as well i think you just press 2580 on the remote with the disc tray open or something.

Just want to add that this model plays cds VERY well - nearly as good as my NAD CD player - so will be a good match for your stereo amp, especially as you said you cant afford separates this is a great double act that saves you space and money.

That's an excellent deal and for dvd playback alone, it's a steal. I'm not sure how good it will be for cd's though.

yeah was thinking that myself. WHFs review says the same. The yamaha is definitely quite special in that respect.

Go for the Pioneer. The DVR-LX50 DVD player officially retails for £295 as it has been dropped in price by Pioneer, so not a great saving, but an excellent product for the money all the same.
