Unfortunately, these do not provide a resolution to the issues on this thread.

Oh well, I gave it my best shot...

But reading back through this thread and the one I linked, I think the problem may be that you've set the Listening Mode/input format selector to Analog/PCM, not Multich PCM.

That should mean the system is only getting one datastream, carrying just two channels, rather than the four carrying eight that multichannel LPCM uses.

There appears to be no way to tell the 606 what to expect. I cannot set a default (as far as I can see). When setting the Listening Mode Presets for DVD I cannot turn off Analogue/PCM (the one I think it is using). The best I can do is set it to use last valid (mode).
Out of the Listening mode presets which are available for DVD (and there are many...12 I think) I have only defined what to do if the 606 detects Multichannel PCM. The trouble is that it isn't detecting it. It is detecting Analogue/PCM so is using the last valid mode for that, which was PLII Movie.
What a crock! I'm at a loss. The 606 thinks it's cleverer than me (don't you hate clever software) or the PS3 is outputing the wrong signature.
Incidently, if you hit the select button on the PS3 remote, it will tell you what format it thinks it is decoding. As far as I can tell, it is right.
I think there is a real issue here. But who to blame? I can't tell without another source which outputs Linear PCM.
I do want to use LPCM, so that as new formats evolve hopefully a download to the PS3 will cope with them. But if I can't get the 606 to recognise the source as multichannel then it's all a bit of a waste of time (and money).
Know anyone in power who can take a look at this? Sony? Onkyo?

Andrew, better prepare yourself for some serious butt kissing......
I take it all back. What a man. Fantastic. His breadth of knowledge in unparalleled. Clare, give that man a pay rise.
The PS3 what a fab bit of kit and the 606....brilliant!

Yes that sorted it. Anything which mentioned 5.1 or 7.1 I ticked. The PS3 did warn me that I might damage my speakers if I got it wrong so I turned it right down.
I knew things were going well when the amp display said DVD: Multichannel
The THX optimizer worked a treat. No problems
Do you know if the 606 actually does support all of the formats specified by the PS3? Is it detailed in the Onk table on page 58. The bit that says under PCM 32-96kHz and 176.4-192kHz

Damn Andrew, you stole my thunder!!!!!!!
I would have come to the same resolution had I not had to go to work today, oh for the perks of working for Whathifi and surfing the net all day!!!
PJPro - yes it does support all formts and if you are going to be inclined to listening to music through the PS3 set the 'audio output frequency' found in the music settings in the PS3 menu to the 44.1-176.4 setting and the bitmapping to type 3

I can't take the credit. It was all down to my good friend Artie Effem.

Yes, it will handle them: AFAICR multichannel up to 96kHz and stereo beyond that.

Something else to look at, when playing blu ray(in my case ratatouille) select audio set up from the blu ray menu and hit linear pcm, (I have it set to linear on the ps3 settings also) not dolby digital, (dolby d is compressed) . The quality of the sound is awesome. When you hit the display button on the ps3 remote it will tell you what format it is playing in.

Pleasure - it's what I do. I knew if we worked through it methodically with the manuals we'd get there in the end.

Now I know this may be a few months later, but I still have a few problems. Going off on what PJPro said, if I check all the 5.1 and 7.1 boxes, as soon as I save the settings, my screen goes static for a second then turns to black. Why'd this happen? If it's any help, I could only get sound on my PS3 for a while before I found out that I had to turn on the "Audio TV Out" under the "HDMI" settings in the "Hardware Setup", then everything came into order. Now, I've followed all the instructions on these couple of pages, and this is my only problem. Does anyone here have any solutions?
