I have a sony Dvp s7700 and sony dvp s9000 es dvd players,i have these both connected to my Yamaha dsp z9 ,my s7700 will allow me to upscale the picture to 1080i via component video, the s9000es will only let me upscale the picture to 576i,the s9000 es player has progresive scan ,the s7700 does not, does any body no why one will upscale to 1080i and the other only to 576i,strange to me,both are using component video outputs,im wondering if the reason why the s9000 es will not output progresive scan is because im outputting the picture to my panasonic 42inch plasma ehich is already a progressive picture, can any one help me on this subject?

Well if it's the player below the 9000es doesn't upscale, 576 is probably the native resolution.

If I remember correctly, 576i is the data on the DVD. This is the format it's stored in. So any work done to bring it up to progressive and raise the resolution is done by video processing chips at some point in the chain. The Panasonic screens are very good at de-interlacing (turning the 576i into 576p) and also at upconverting to the native resolution of the screen. The only reason to do it outside the screen, before the signal reaches the screen is if a piece of kit you have contains better video processing chips than your screen does. There is no other reason why you'd need to do this.

So, if you're not happy with the job your screen does with the 576i signal, you'll need to invest in either a better player with better upconversion and de-interlacing chips or a better AV amp with the same improvement.

That said, Panasonic screens are very capable so I wouldn't worry too much.

Any What HiFi people agree?

Hi Will, thanks for the advice i see what you are saying, but im still none the wiser is to why my s7700 through my dsp z9 allows me to select 1080i with superb picture result, and the s9000 es to 576i or 576p,if i select 1080i with the s9000es through my amp the screen flashes blank every 10 secs say then back to the movie and the same with 576p and 720p,so 576i is the only option i can select for that dvd player as with the s7700 i can select any through the amp and it changes all of the options ,i.e 576p/576i/720p/1080i,i would of thought being a more expensive player that the s9000 es would give a better picture than the other or at least identical quality, still very good though in 576i.

There is another solution which would be to ditch the Sony and buy some decent kit! ;-p
