Hi guys,

Haven't been on here in a while. A friend of mine owns a PS3 and a Samsung HDTV. He wants to add surround sounds speakers, and has asked me for advice.

He's not particularly keen about audio, and I doubt that he'd have anywhere near an ideal speaker arrangement if he got a system, so he only needs something basic. His only requirement is that the system works with his BD movies.

I know there's all sorts of speaker packages available, but the only ones I can find are either just speakers, or speakers and DVD player. Do any systems exist which are just speakers and surround-sound processor/amplifier? He's not very technically minded, so I'm worried that a full-blown AV amp and speaker package will just baffle him. At the same time, he's got a perfectly adequate blu-ray/DVD player, so he doesn't really need a DVD system either.

The ideal system would be a compact 5.1 speaker package that includes a surround-sound amp with an HDMI input - you can't get much simpler than one cable! Any ideas?

You haven't mentioned a budget, but this Onkyo HTX-22HD system looks like it'll fit. It's only 2.1 but can be expanded out to a full 5.1 system if he wants (though it sounds like he might not want to bother?). It'll accept multichannel PCM from his PS3 and also decodes all the main HD audio formats so should work nicely with any future upgrades in Blu-Ray player.

Thanks for that suggestion. My friend seems pretty happy with that!
