4.3 being displayed at 720p

Having got The Adventures of Robin Hood 1939 Film on Blu Ray I am unable to display either a full screen or a 14.9 letterbox

On the back of the Region Free Disc by Warner Brothers it states 4.3 /1080p so I'm guessing 4.3 was the original way in which the movie was shot in those days

When watching on my 1024 X 768 TV two thick black bars on both sides of the screen show up

I watch through a PS3 and even through I have tried to change to Full Screen nothing happens

Strange you know particularly as I also have the DVD of the movie which does display a full screen on the TV though the BD transfer is far superior

You are correct in thinking that 4;3 is the original aspect ratio that movies in the thirties were filmed and screened in. I'm not an expert in blu ray output, but I suspect that it is actually outputting a 16:9 full screen picture and the black framing bars at the sides are part of this whole image.
