3D TV Technology Issue

I have the UE46C8000, I had reported convergence problems or Cross Talk i think some people call it? Anyway the back ground images when watching 3D content on sky, create a very slight double vision effect but enough to spoil the viewing experience. Its like a blur and sends you eyes a little mad!

I've had engineers out twice now and they have reported that this is a 3D problem in general and not actually the sets. It seems 3D tv has a long way to go, so I'd save your pennies until they have got it right!

I'm pushing for a refund and to replace with a normal HD TV and wait for 3D tv at a later date, although I feel they will want to try and replace my TV set first so we'll see what happens there. Might sort it you never know! I'm wondering if its the source content however, it could be just Sky 3D that creates the problem or it a more general issue. Live footage is the worst! I watched Barcelona and Madrid and just ended up watching it in HD.

Potentially if they get 3D right it will be excellent but for now I'd hang fire for those looking at 3D sets, might be worth waiting for the 3D TV's wthout glasses but I can see issues with those sets.

Andy,

Surely the simplest answer if the 3D doesn't work for you, is just not to use it. Your TV is a normal HDTV (and a very good quality one) but it also has the option to decode and watch 3D footage. I therefore see no point, if you are happy with the Samsung's 2D picture, of going through the hassle of changing it. Also, one thing to remember about Sky's 3D footage is that it is half the resolution of standard HD footage so the image is already compromised. Also, you say that the sport coverage is worse (do films suffer from any of the same problems on Sky 3D?). My feeling (although as I don't have Sky I can't investigate further) is that this may be something to do with the fact that sport coverage is usually natively shot interlaced whereas film is natively progressive and this may be further compromising the 3D effect. Have you got a 3D Bluray and if so do you get the same problems when you watch 3D Blurays ? They will be full resolution and progressive, so if they are ok, then you can safely assume that it's probably more to do with the method Sky is using to transmit 3D than solely the TV.

Good Luck

Rob

was thinking this actually, I will check actually as I have watched all 3d material through Sky.

Films arent as bad, but I still notice the issue.

Has anyone else had issues with the 3d quality with Sky, if you look for it you'll notice it. To start with I never noticed it, but now I always look for it it drives me insane!

Only had my Samsung a couple of days, but I have watched a lot of 3d content on Sky only, and I have had no cross talk issues or IR for that matter, the black levels are not the best granted, but every review I have read states this set has a lot less cross talk than any of Samsungs LED range of TVs. When I auditioned this set I was quiet willing to spend 3 x as much if it meant a huge step in performance, guess what, nothing was worth the extra investment IMO, not even the 46HX903, which had more cross talk also.

I checked one 3d blu ray and noticed the problems but need tp see how shrek behaves, the problems ease up the longer the tv has been on!

Will say i've had nothing but issues with this TV, had major lip sync issues until a couple of software updates! not sure what i'm supposed to do, especially when a samsung engineer says there is nothing they can do, this is the norm!

Maybe it is the TV and I need a replacement! i've been into two stores and noticed the same problem over the weekend too.

An update on my 3D saga, two engineers out now from Sasmung (VSC) and both have seen the 3D issues i am experiencing.

They basically said "This is a 3D limitation and depends on the content, it is manipulation of frames and not a defect"

Samsung Reply

"Thank you for your recent, We have looked at the
attachment you have provided which clearly states there is not a defect with
the unit. The issue is content based and some media provide a better 3D
effect than others
If you are not happy with your purchase then you would need to
take this up with your retailer as the unit is functioning to specification"

So i have been fobbed off basically, Samsung's marketing machine continues! I still think my TV in particular has issues and I was pushing for a replacement or a change for one of the new 2nd generation 3D Tv's to see if these are better!

I suppose its still a very good HD TV, but with regards watching SKY in 3D just forget it!! I'm going to check out some 3d Movies but I feel like I have been well a truly sold down the road!

Anyone from WHAT Hifi got any advice or thoughts!

I'm afraid "The unit is functioning to specification" is a euphemism adopted by TV manufacturers of late to describe displays that function poorly. Another way of interpreting this statement is, "lump it, because we're not prepared to acknowledge there is a problem."

Have you spoken to the retailer to explain how unhappy you are?

well i have attempted to but they havent responded to my email, happy to get the sale but not to help sort the issues I have been having.

Basically I need to speak to the engineers again and see where that lands me.

The 3D from Blu-ray content seems fine, just on sky its very poor! The best way to describe it is to put an object right in front of your eyes and then focus on things in the back ground, it will all seem a bit blurred and in some cases you can see two of one thing just slightly overlapped.
