Hi all

ok as you will notice im not a very technical person.

Ive just got a 3D tv and been looking into A/V recievers for a cinema setup, i already have a 3d blu ray player.

Am i right that for top quality sound i need HDMI v1.4 ports??? i take it this is a particular hdmi port version and if it was lower than 1.4 the sound wouldnt be as good or not work at all???

cheers

The problem is more one of 3D video pass-through, which is guaranteed with HDMI 1.4. You could just connect your 3D sources direct to the TV and use optical or electrical digital connections into a receiver without HDMI 1.4 sockets, but then you won't get HD sound from the BD player, for example.

An AVR with 1.4 ports will allow pass through of full HD 3D picture and lossless HD audio from your Blu ray player. However, this does not mean you still can't have this with 1.3 port AVR. If you have a player with anologue outs and feed that to the AVR and get the player to decode the HD sound track or you could have a player with twins outputs like the panasonic BT110 that allows the 1.4 port output to be connected direct to the TV and the 1.3 port to the AVR for HD sound. if you went down the route of a AVR with 1.3 ports, this would mean you could probably get one further up the range, as these will be priced very competitively now, to sell them.
