2 problems with wifes computor

The following error message appears when the wife opens an e-mail and clicks any link inside the e-mail.
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."[/b]

The other problem is with icons that have been on her desktop for ages. When she clicks on some of them, not all this message appears.
"Unable to open this Internet Shortcut. The protocol "http" does not have a registered program."[/b]

These problems just happened last night and we don't know what to do because up to about 8pm last night all was well.

Sounds like whichever browser she uses has either got corrupted or just failed in an update or something similar. Reinstalling the browser should hopefully solve both problems.

You don’t say what OS you are using but if it is XP or later, then make sure your computer security software is up to date (Anti-Virus etc.) and do a Full (Not Quick) scan of your computer just in case it has become infected. (Computers don’t just go wrong for no reason, something has to have changed)

When clear, restore your computer to an earlier time before the problem occurred, to see if the problem is fixed.

When restored update your security once again (Rolling back will have removed the latest updates) and do another Full scan.

If you still have problems post again and I will explain how to reassign the shortcuts and file associations. (It’s also explained in the Windows help file)

Boot or restart windows with F8 key pressed as it comes up (it needs to be pressed before Windows starts otherwise you'll have to try again with another restart).

A menu like this will present some options.

Choose "Last Known Good Configuration (Your most recent settings that worked)" option.

That is another option, however if his computer is infected the restore (Last known good configuration) will probably not get rid of it and the infection will cause the same problems again, hence my point of doing a full security scan first.

It was simple in the end. Don't know how or why but Explorer was no longer the default browser. I made it the default and all is well.

Still don't why it wasn't the default though.
