1080p problem

I have just become the proud owner of a Mitsubishi HC7000 1080p projector (to replace my Benq PE7700 720P projector). The problem is that if I change the image to 1080p on my Sony dbp-s350 the projector will not display an image although 1080i works).

I have a 10m vivanco HDMI cable in the ceiling (fitted by the installers 3 yrs ago). Is this the likely culprit?

I know I could try with a shorter cable but this will be tricky.

Any ideas most welcome, thanks.

It could be the cable as most HDMI cable's lose the 1080p signal at around 7.5m unless otherwise stated, being your cable is 3 years old it could be the case as HDMI cable's have evolved in 3 years and most newer cable's dont have the issue with 1080p transmission at a reasonable long distance such as 10m.

If you do have access to a shorter cable to try out, then that would be a good start but i hope it wont be too tricky for you.

Thank you - since posting I have realised I can probably move the projector to the bluray player as holding the bluray player up near the projector sounded like a recipe for disaster.

That would of been tricky holding a blu ray player in mid air! Good to hear you can try the projector near the player, give it a shot, it will be the best way to eliminate and make sure your projector is ok working at 1080p.

Good Luck

Easier than I thought - the shorter QED cable works fine.

No idea how I am going to pull the new one through the ceiling cavity as I cannot get the old one to move. There are 4 speaker wires and a mains cable up there also and I think they must all be tangled!

Great to hear that you have 1080p output from your projector but sorry to hear that you are going to have problems replacing the cable thats in the ceiling cavity, i hope you find a way to sort it out without too much hassle.

Also, when you do get a cable to replace the Vivanco cable you have already have in the ceiling, just make sure you investigate and get the right cable for you that supports 1080p at 10 metre's.

UKHDMI sell an Ikuna HDMI cable rated at 1080p for over 10m at only £24.99 for 8m (which I think would work - estimating the cable run). I assume I can trust their rating of it being capable?

As long as they state it works and carries a 1080p signal at 8m, then i would say give it a go, just make sure there is a refund policy if in case it does not work.

Just a thought - you could try an HDMI repeater such as this at the projector end, which will boost the signal a bit and may get you back to 1080P without changing your existing cable.

No guarantee it'll work, but it's not a lot of money to try, and you could probably return it if it didn't do the job.

As I said, just a thought...

Hi Andrew

Thanks for that - it would certainly be a LOT easier than pulling a new cable through. Do you think the quality would be on par with an entirely new budget cable (circa £25 for about 8m), or is that hoping for too much.

Thanks - I know it sounds obvious but in all the excitement and stress I bet I would forget just that and battle on pulling a new cable through before testing it!!

If it works, it should be fine - oh, and you'll need another short cable between repeater and projector.

It's certainly a lot less hassle than trying to install a new cable, which is why I suggested it might be worth a go.

UPDATE: The repeater people could not guarantee it would work or that they would cover postage etc. so I temporarily cancelled the order. In the meantime I thought I would see if it was possible for me to pull the new cable through by using the old one.

I eventually unravelled the old cable from up in the ceiling cavity and found 8 metres of slack!! They had installed a 15m cable (I suppose 'just in case'). No wonder I couldn't get 1080p.

Having managed to slide the old cable back and forth, I have now opted to install a new cable (as I thought a £2500 projector deserved it!).

Fingers crossed that however I join the 2 cables together, to pull the new one through, doesn't break.

Any ideas on how best to pull a new cable through? Should I tape the new to the old or use the old cable to pull through a rope first and then use this to pull through the new cable?

IDEAS please.
