1080p on a 32 inch set - can you tell the difference?

Hi all, I was just wondering if you would be able to tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p on a 32 inch, non 1080p LCD TV?

Assuming the answer is no, would I be able to see a difference in picture quality between something like the Pioneer 51FD and the Denon 2500BT on this 32 inch, non 1080p screen?

Any input would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance

It all depends on the quality of the screen in question, the quality of the source, and how far you're sitting from the set!

Then, of course, you have to weigh up the opposite argument - re SD looking better on a non-1080p set....

I'd rather have a great-quality 32in HD Ready set than a poor-quality 32in Full HD (1080p) set - there's so much more to performance than resolution (blacks, colours, digital noise, motion-handling etc).

However, with a great source like the Pioneer 51FD, and a superb Full HD TV, you will notice extra detail if you sit reasonably close to the set.

I'd say the Pioneer as far as i'd go for a 32in set - the picture capabilties of higher-end players like the Denon would be overkill and really suit 40in+ sets.

Thanks Clare, great advice.

I think the biggest set I would get for my viewing distance (which is 3-3.5m) would be a 37 inch set, and you are saying that I wouldn't really notice the 51FD/2500BT difference even at this screen size?

Also, I was wondering what your thoughts are on why Sony's 37" W series set is not full HD, when the 32" and 40" models are? Have you heard of any plans for a sony 37" full HD set in the more affordable W, or even V ranges?

Thanks again!

Viewing a 37in set from 3-3.5m I'd argue the Pioneer is more than good enough - i'd only step up to the Denon if you're also after its superior audio (but again, you'd need a serious AV system for that to be an issue: the Pioneer's great sonically, too).

And lord knows what Sony's TV plans are - their ranges make very little sense right now. We should have a better idea of UK models for 2009 later this month, and will keep you updated.

I'd also consider a 40-42in set from your viewing distance - worth measuring out the actual size of these sets, as these slightly larger sets aren't typically much bigger in footprint than a 37in set, but you'll notice a real difference in your viewing pleasure.

Any screen less than 40 inches at least, you would be hard pressed to notice any real difference.
