Needed......

Freeview HD that has Dolby Digital working through the optical output on every programme with it on... (2010 Panasonic's don't!!![:|])

46/50' screen

3D NOT needed, but might be useful in the future????

Few problems as possible (eg. imagine retention/burn.....panel lottery etc)

5 year warranty would be good.....

So far:

Sony KDL 46EX503 plus 5 year Sony Warranty.......£825 (5 star review at £1200)

LG 50PK350 plus 5 year Richer Sounds warranty + Humax Fox T2 HD tuner.....£850(4 star TV, 5 Star tuner)

Any others I've missed???

Your still looking then pete ! i thought max put you off the lg350 with the image stuff etc lol !

i was also looking at getting the pk350 but after the stuff ive read about image retention etc my pana pz doesnt seem to have any issues like the lg as im sure your px model doesnt either !!

i would go for the sony if it were my 850 !! im gonna hang out and get another pana , the 50v model but only when the price comes down more !!

My PX80 has been great with no problems at all....which is why I think my parents are having it!!!

Watch out for this year's Panny tv's if you want full dolby digital from the HD tuner....BBC changed their coding, and no Panny tv is compatiable, and Panny can't be bother to send a firmware out to sort it.......

Thinking Sony is best option too....but will i regret going from plasma and 50' screens????

Well you have a 42 at the moment and 46 is a nice size up . if you dont get or have a 50 then you wont know any different !! i looked at a 47s and 50s in the pana shop the other day and not much in it imo and i remember you saying 50 might be a bit big ?

but i know what you mean about loosing the plasma and going for the lcd but remember it did get a good review just like your px did and if you get one with a 5yr warranty then i dont see a problem , just go for it !!!

i still have 2yrs left on my pana warranty and im waiting for it to break but it just wont !! seems to me that the px and pz models from a few years ago seem to be better/more reliable then the current models !

Well Pete my parents had a look at both the LG 350 and 590 and weren't impressed, so its the Sony 46EX503 which i can get for £799 with the free 5yr warranty. They seem to like the vibrant and bright screen with a sharp picture.Instead of the pale more natural picture, and certainly don't want to worry about image retention.

The only problem is they are so fussy and now insist on having a matching av stand that has to be solid wood. Teak infact and its not a pale colour similar to oak or a dark oak colour. Its more in the middle and redish like Walnut.

But for the life of me, i just can't find that colour anywhere, and starting to think that the furniture isn't Teak at all as nothing seems to resemble it. Budget is £300 and the only one that comes close mum hates. So i think ill leave that up to them.

an lg50px990... why wouldn't you? robert white had em for £899 recently so i expect they should be available for similar money in the january sales..great 2d and 3dtv..job done

the 503 is good at 37inches and okay at 40. I'd take a long look at one displaying standard definition before parting with cash...

Went into Curry's this evening to look at tv's....the 50' ones looked so much bigger than the 46/7' ones there, it made me think.......

LCD seem easier to deal with day to day, but after seeing my mates one and then my plasma tonight, plasma look nicer......

Admittedly his is 5/6 years old....so maybe the newer LCD's are closer to plasma these days????

Big Aura:the 503 is good at 37inches and okay at 40. I'd take a long look at one displaying standard definition before parting with cash...

After a 5 star review in this magazine, what are you saying about this 46' Sony LCD tv, big aura?

Seen it in action with Sky HD football, and it looks amazing!!!!

Personally, I wasn't impressed with SD images on the 503 (40 inches). Very soft images with dull colours. I was disappointed, as I first went round to see this TV in action based on WHF reviews. Some Samsung models looked much better (can't remember which model). The LG 50PX990 is stunning, & so is Samsung PS50C7000.

Have you seen any of the TVs? You should go & check them out yourself.

Interesting view bigboss........

Did you see these tv's in the same shop? Reason I ask is that, in my opinion, you will not get the best signal through to these tv's when the shop is using the aerial signal to go through all 30 (example) tv's in their showroom.....

Obviously at home you get one tv on one aerial, with (probably) better quality aerial cable used....

I have seen the Sony with Sky Sports HD through it, and it looked very good.....

Seen the LG with a blu ray disc playing through it........again very good picture indeed.....

My mate has just connected a Humax Fox T2 into his system....I saw it for the first time last night, and the PQ/SQ was very good....better than his Sony DVD recorder freeview tuner.....

Both tv's are still very much in the running, but a decision will have to be made by Monday.....hmmmmm

Get the sony pete , it has a good review and sounds like you have already made your mind up as you mentioned you were impresed with the picture !

So were the 50inch to big ? i went to currys today to get a hoover and looked at the pk350 again , looks nice but very very shiny screen .

If you go the sony route then let us know as you may well sway me to lcd too , lol !

SWMBO thinks 50' is too big......

I have a large window behind my couch, so LG's reflective screen maybe a problem anyway.....

It seems no tv is perfect this year.......I've just been reading horror stories of 'banding' on the EX503 range......especially the larger screens (40, 46, and 55)........

Some have had 3 replacements tv's, all with the same problem!!!

This might end up being a case of 'better the devil you know'.......

Do the what hifi team do tests for banding etc when testing any tv????
