hi i am getting a little tied of my br5's they are great but they are going too deep and lose a touch control at the bottom end when turned up.And maybe being a bit over the top the midrange trys a bit hard. I am thinking of losing my rears and making them my fronts on my av set up.

I am off to demo some speakers monday and live in leicester might try leicester hifi and hifix near the ikea in coventry.

I am looking at around the £450 mark which would only take 12-14 weeks to save. I am not going near floorstanders as the purchased speakers need to be 10-12 inchs from the wall 6ft apart and 7ft from me sitting in the middle. I have no wall behind for 20ft so if the bass needs to roll out thats not a problem.I have wooden floor and are using kitchen tiles to keep them off.kits listed below

I like that look of MS mezzo2's-MA Rs1's or Rx1's-rega rs1's-B&W 685's .

music is hard because i like stuff like love, bruce(the boss),sting, sia, oli brown, tunng, the who and mrs likes lady gaga, jayz and all that.

any thoughts would be great simon

cheers matt i know the 11's get great comments but out my price league. i thought the 7's were rears really so i will have a longer look. just to add a spanner to the works what would a alpha9 power amp do to my speakers

What power is your current amp?

The 7's can be used as main speakers and ive heard they are amazing for their size but will need some decent power

The 70watt's might be just enough for the scm7's, but 100 or more would be better.

As for Bi-amping your speakers, im not sure really, but you could probably expect a bit more of the sound you have now. Better bass control and more detail.

thanks alot for you time matt i was looking at the 8p but if i have the 9amp i cant see that being wise. I have just googled them speakers and they look really good. I will ring round and try and see if a demo is possible on monday locally. In bi-amping would i be using the watts per channel on the power amp just for the bottom end. I find it goes deep but with no speed almost feel like its lagging the midrange if that makes sense

you might be able to get some 2nd hand scm11s for your budget, could always sell them on if you didn't like them, although i rarely see them on ebay. my scm19s are about 9 or 10 inches from the rear wall with no bass issues at all.

Sell your speakers and get yourself some Rega RS3's

they are nice but i cant see the point of having some £650 speakers with only a £450 laptop-£250 dac and a £200s/hand arcam amp.

I want to run the speakers at the best they can. I feel i have easy to drive speakers so standmounts would be my move if i choose to move. Dan1979 have you any comments on the rega rs1's

Dali Ikon 1's are the first that spring to my mind. They are front ported, produce a good level of bass without sounding forced and have glorious treble.

Yes, in Bi-amping you would be using the power amp just for the bass drivers and the intergrated amp for the tweeters.

Sounds like your having bass issues alright, but it would be hard to pin point the cause. Most likely caused by the speakers/room by the sounds of it.

it could be the room but at low levels it is what im after punchy and very good sound-stage. But turn these up and they give deeper bass than i want i really thought these sized speakers would not be capable of. The dac-magic seems to have made it worse, but night time listening is a treat with the dac-magic.

I am totally misplacing my CM1s near a wall without any issues. At £500 they are a little over your budget but well worth listening to.

Definitly sounds like the room interacting with your speakers if its ok at lower levels and gets worse as you turn it up.

Sealed box loaded speakers like the ATC's will solve that issue, but if you can find some used or ex dem scm11's, don't dismiss them in favour of the 7's. Think of future upgrades.

thanks matt you have been a great help. i have read old threads and i have read that my speakers are laided back and the arcam alpha9 is a smooth amp so when pushed this could be my problem. So i think i might demo Rega rs1's,dali ikon1's and kef 1q30's and see what that brings. i really cant see me getting them atcs but we can all dream.

JohnDuncan:AVI Neutron V...

I'll second that. Or some ProAc Tablette Reference 8 Signatures on fleabay s/h.

Gordon Brown? I would have suggested Tony Blair who is a much better speaker but I think he's over budget.

The neutron v's would be a great choice, as well as the leema xero's.

Cheap affordable high performance speaker that retains control close to a wall, the Neo 3's

another vote for the avi neutrons, I had my origenal demo of them with some newer arcam kit (can't remember which) and they were great, they don't mind being too close to a wall either, mine are about 9-10 inches from a back wall.
