Hi Everyone, I’m sure I’m not the first novice to visit the forum seeking advice so thanks in advance for your repeated wise words! Basically, I’ve picked my TV and cinema kit as well as the Sky HD box & PS3 for blue ray / gaming and I want to make sure that I get the best out my equipment. I’m not putting in an audio system for the time being. I’m planning on getting the Sony KDL 40W4000 TV along with the Sony DAV IS10 Home Cinema Kit. First of all in regards to the TV, I’m going to be sitting just under 3 meters away. Would your advice be to go for a smaller TV than the 40” I’m planning to buy? I suppose my main question is do with maximising performance by adding quality caballing and other extras if required. Would you be able to advise on of what I will require to achieve the top performance from all the equipment? Any product recommendations would also be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

hi there, If you watchin shy hd then that distance should be fine. But for sd telly watchin it may show imperfections in the pic. I am watchin hd-dvd's and they fine at that distance but I have to sit a good 9ft away when I want to watch sd telly for it to to be ok.
As for the cables I think you will need a optical cable for the sky box others correct me if i wrong. You can take your pic form this site that i use www.audiovisualonline.co.uk they got a large selection and should have all the cables you will need or you can try Ebay for some bargains. You could also try both of my suggested sites for a HDMI Cable for your sky box to your tv. Although I got a QED HDMI-P CABLE from ebay for 28.50 delivered. Bargain!
Hope I have been of help good luck.

Wise words indeed, wise words from me to you, do not fix a plasma yourself and if you are going to make 1 large tv out of 2 use a very very strong glue no more nails is ideal for this job esp for crt these need extra care sticking together because of the extra weight.

Paul,

Thanks for your help. May need to go for a 37" or 38" with the TV, but the restricts me on the Sony's...

Prob a stupid question, but is the optical cable from the Sky box to the aerial socket? Would I also need to get an HDMI for a connection between PS3 to the TV and Sony DAV IS10 to the TV? Finally, does anyone know if it is worth replacing the speaker's cables on the DAV home cinema?

Cheers...

I'm watching the Sony 40V3000 from no more than 3m and it looks good!

I have also found that watching SD Sky is improved when running the signal through my Sony DVD Player. On my post on the subject earlier today (http://whathifi.co.uk/forums/t/13426.aspx) it was explained that the upscaling is better through the DVD than by the TV itself. You may want to try this with the Sony DAV-IS10, I expect you can connect the HD Sky box via HDMI to the Receiver and onwards to the TV. I'm sure someone else can confirm.

Enjoy!

You could go for the 37px80 panasonic plasma which i have seen for 599 pounds it is highly rated by most. The optical cable is for carrying sound only and it uses a red laser. Plug it one end where it says optical out on the sky box then plug in other end on optical in on the Sony DAV Amp. NOT THE AERIAL SOCKET. This is where the lead running from your sky dish should go into.
As for the PS3 did your come with a hdmi lead as i am sure they all do? if not try the Qed Hdmi-P lead for around 30 pound on ebay it is quality.
Also, Will you be using the PS3 or the Sony System to watch films? I would use the PS3 for the games and films and the sony system for the sound. You could have one Hdmi going from the PS3 to the TV and swap the optical cable over from the SKY BOX to the PS3 while keeping the other end in the Sony Amp. This will save you money.
If you don't want to keep swapping the cables just buy two optical cables and a splitter like on this link: http://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/dynamic/eshop_products.set/ref/217/optical-switching-box-3-way/display.html
Hope this helps anymore questions just ask,i will try to help.

That may just work although i sont have the system so would only be guessing.
Oh yeh, As for the speaker cable...Is it spring loaded terminals? If it is you may be able to get Qed micro wire in there and this would be way better than the bell wire rubbish supplied and it's cheap too.

hi again, I see someone else saying that the sony dav system does not have a hdmi input only has one output to tv so that could really be a hindurance for the other idea.

The Sony DAV-IS10 only upscales content from its own in-built DVD player and also has no HDMI in, so you're better off hooking the PS3 and Sky HD direct to the TV via HDMI for video and then connect them both via optical to the DAV-IS10 using a splitter / switch as Paul suggested earlier for sound.

Cheers for your help gents. All a bit clearer now.

I just can't get over how quick the new product lines are introduced... I can see myself wanting to replace the set upwithin 2 years, but that's a few thousand quid down the pan. Is there much of a second hand market if I want to keep in touch with the latest equipment?
