I'm new to all this, so any advice will be appreciated. I'll give you my thoughts, so far, on these 3 options:

RX-V673 - Has received excellent reviews, including being named WHF's AV Product of the Year! It's this years model, so is both up to date and will likely continue to receive support for longer than the other two models. It has all the latest features and is said to be very good for both 'video' and music. It's rated at 90W per channel. Price - just under £500.

RX-A1010 - Has received excellent reviews, including a 5 star review from WHF. It's last years model, so may not be totally up to date and will likely lose support earlier than the 673. It still appears to be pretty feature-packed, however, including most of the features (not all) that are available on the 673. It's meant to be considerably better at music than the 673, although it's 'video' performance appears to be nothing more than average. It's rated at 110W per channel. Price - roughly £550.

RX-A2010 - Has received excellent reviews. It's last years model, so may not be totally up to date and will likely lose support earlier than the 673. However it's extra power and spec would mean that it would probably provide a better degree of legroom, re' any future upgrades to the system. It appears to be pretty feature-packed, including most of the features (not all) that are available on the 673. It's meant to be considerably better at music than the 673 and better than the 1010. It's 'video' performance is also said to be excellent. It's rated at 140W per channel. Price - roughly £750.

Although my main use will be for TV/DVD/Blu Ray, it will also be my main music source. It will probably be partnered with Mordaunt Short Aviano 8 floorstanders and the Aviano 5 centre speaker. I will probably use some old Wharfedale Valdus 100SE bookshelf speakers as surround speakers. The Blu-Ray player will be the Sony BDP-S790. The CD player will probably be the Marantz CD6004. I have no immediate plans to get a sub. Though I may consider one, some time next year. My room is roughly 15ft by 25ft, (ceiling roughly 8ft). The speakers will be playing across the 15ft space.

My first choice is which to choose, between the 673 and the 1010, as there is only £50 difference in price. I then need to compare the winner of that contest with the 2010 and decide if the 2010 is worth the extra £200-£250. One consideration is that the Aviano 8s are said to need driving a little harder to get the best out of them. Another consideration is future-proofing, both re' any future upgrdes to speakers and aother components and with regrds feature sets. The main considerations will be audio/video performance and ease of use.

Thank you for taking the time to read all of that. Any and all advice gratefully received. In advance, thank you! :)

Hi Codex77

Take a look through the top cover vents at the insides of the RX-V673 and compare to the Aventage RX-A1010's symmetrical layout, bigger transformer, etc. Then compare the overall build quality and physical size of the Aventage RX-A1010 to that of the RX-V673. These three differences alone are worth more then the £50 difference. As good as the RX-V673 is however RX-V673 lacks RX-A1010's overall drive and control and sounds somewhat thin and loose in comparision to the Aventage RX-A1010. £50 premium - what are you waiting for

The Aventage RX-A1010 doesn't have the physical presence of the RX-A2010 and internally the Aventage RX-A1010 also looks somewhat sparse in relation to the internal contruction of Aventage RX-A2010. The Aventage RX-A2010's greater quantity and quality of power also enables the Aventage RX-A2010 to maintain better stability at almost any comparable listening level. As good as the Aventage RX-A1010 is however the Aventage RX-A2010 sounds tighter, faster, smoother and with more body, weight and verve whereas the Aventage RX-A1010 sounds flat and compressed in comparision to the Aventage RX-A2010.

Btw, i would not recommend spending £200 - £300 on a CD player. Put this sum towards the Aventage RX-A2010 instead. Use the Blu Ray player as transport and feed the CD's digital data into the Aventage RX-A2010. I am almost certain that by using the digital to analogue conversion of the Aventage RX-A2010 you'll have performance as good if not better CD performance then the CD player which you are considering. A neater solution with one less box and no extra running costs.

Btw, Monitor Audio's Silver RX6 and Silver RX Centre are also worth serious considering. Yamaha AV amplification and Monitor Audio speakers form a great match :rockout:

Hi Codex77,

I'd snap up a 2010 while you have the chance at the current prices to be honest. The choice between the 673 and the A1010 is essentially a "no-brainer" for the extra £50, but the step-up to the 2010 is well worth the extra investement. Not only have you a better amp section than the 1010 (you can most certainly hear the difference with an A/B demo) but you've also got the extra channels to do with as you please, be it for extra surrounds or another zone of audio. Stereo performance is admirable and one of those extra channels can be used to bi-amp your fronts if you prefer that so there's a lot of flexibility with what you can do with it in that regard. The video quality is also superior to the 1010 due to the HQV, whereas both the 1010 and 810 use Yamaha's own chipset instead. On a side note - if better AV quality all round isn't enough you also get a nicer remote. Small thing I know, but the remote on the 1010 is just a cheap affair like the 673, not worthy of a £1000 receiver in my opinion. But then you might go the app route anyway...

Just to complicate it slightly further I wonder if any of the knowledgeable people here could compare the Yamaha RX-a2010 (having come out on top in the above comparison) to the:

Pioneer SCLX85 (I've been offered one for £999, the RF remote control appeals!) and the:

Onkyo TX-NR818 - (Audyssey MultEQ XT32 appeals!). :?

To both Musicraft and AVonline. Thank you very much for your replies. The advice is greatly appreciated and has helped to crystalise my thoughts on the matter. :)

I was tending towards the 2010 and your thoughts have convinced me that I was on the right track. It's somewhat scary, being a 'noob' in this field. Especially considering the outlay. I wanted to get it right and have researched my options for over a month now. The decison re' the TV and blu-ray player was fairly easy but I've been going round in circles re' the AV receiver and the speakers. lol... I've gone from the Onkyo 515 to the Yamaha 673, to the Onkyo 616, back to the 673. Then the 1010 entered the equation and finally the 2010. You have answered any lingering doubts and consequently, I'll be purchasing the Yamaha RX-A2010!

Part of my problem, initially, was that I was wed to the idea of buying from Richer Sounds. Partly for the warranty options. Partly for the relatively cheap installation costs. Being new to all this, I'd want someone to set it up and give me a few pointers. I'm sure I'd get there on my own... eventually but... I'm sure you understand. :) Buying everything from the same place appealed also. However, some of the speaker choices I was considering demoing, weren't stocked by Richer Sounds. This was compounded by the consideration of the 1010 and the 2010. These too were not stocked by Richer Sounds. I've now accepted that my best bet (unless I plump for the Mordaunt Shorts) is to buy both the AV receiver and the speakers from a hi-fi specialist.

Now I'm just left with the choice of speakers. I've narrowed it down to roughly 4 choices: The Mordaunt Short Aviano 8s and the Aviano 5; The Dali Zensor 5 (possibly 7) and the Zensor Vokal; The Tannoy Revolution DC6T and the Revolution Signature DC6T LCR; The Monitor Audio BX5 (or BX6) and the Bronze BX centre. I haven't totally ruled out dropping the centres and going up a range in each case, i.e the Mordaunt Short Mezzo 8s, The Dali Ikon 6 Mk2, The Tannoy Revolution DC6T SE or the Monitor Audio RX6 or RX8s. I've been going round in circles for so long with these final choices that I've accepted that i probably won't get any further without auditioning them in person. So that will be my next move... made somewhat easier by having made a final decision re' the AV. For your help in getting me here, I thank you once again. :)

(p.s. @Musicraft - How would I connect the blu-ray player to act as 'transport', re' CDs? Would it just be by HDMI, or would I need some other connection?)

Hi Codex77

Your welcome.

The HDMI connection/cable will also transfer digital audio from CD's to the AV amplifier

RF remote?? Go Harmony one! Y2010 may.warrant Mezzos 8 or 6 or same qualty. I am biassed and no expert so home audition is by far the best. Spoken from good sense tho not experience. My amp/speakers seem a good match and look good. Cheers

Hi Rick

I will have Monitor Audio Apex A10s as the fronts and a B&W PV1 sub. I will add an A40 centre when funds allow. For rears I have Kef 3005SE speakers, but I may not bother with rears until I can get a couple more A10s as I'd prefer the same speakers all the way around. Primary use will be movies and PS3 gaming, with music coming via iPod/PC.

I currently have a Kef Kit 120 which though good is somewhat limited in its capabilities and I'd like an av receiver to give more options and a 5.1 experience.

Just bought the RX-A2010... for £700! :D

Hadn't realised it was quite so big & heavy! lol... Big and beautiful! :)

Now for the speakers. I've just auditioned the Mordaunt Short Aviano 6s, Dali Zensor 5s and the Monitor Audio Bronze BX5s. I'll be auditioning the Tannoys and the Aviano 8s on Wednesday. So far, I prefer the BX5s and the Dali Zensor 5s. Will need to listen to both again. I'm surprised how powerful the Zensor 5s & the BX5s sounded, considering their size. The Aviano 6 was much larger but didn't sound as clear and crisp, to me. Was surprised also by how much difference removing the grille made!

I bought the 1010 last year 50% off - $550 here in the US. I'm running b&w 685s, b&w 62b center channel, martin Logan dynamo 500, marantz cd5004, etc. I'm very happy with the results. I posted all my equipment because everything has to be considered for the end resulting sound.

Wow so you bought the 2010 without demoing the others? £700 does seem a good price for it!

I bought my Yamaha RX-A2010 without having even heard one, let alone demoing it against other models. This was in July, for £849, because I thought that stocks were running low. Still a bargain compared to its initial price of about £1,400, but not as cheap as it is now. I wonder how many are left? It's very good, by the way, as everyone who owns one has found. It's quite a bit better than the unit it replaced, the already splendid Yamaha RX-V1067, which has now been relegated to the bedroom!
