Hey all,

Ellisdj has put an idea in my head of going after a pre/power rather than upgrading my speaker package. I'm giving some thought and having a look about.

I've come across the Yamaha Aventage CX-A5000 pre and MX-A5000. anyone got them, heard them or have an opinion on them?

I did read that review, and a fair few others, Matey. I always like some first hand opinions to go along with positive reviews, though.

Covering all the bases and all that jazz ☺

I can't help you with Focal Bretty, but yes, we have the CXA5000 and MXA5000 on demonstration, and it was the centrepiece in our main AV demo room at our open day last year (along with Sony's VW500ES Uktra HD PJ). Many will know that I prefer Yamaha's processing with regards to films, as their effects steering tends to be superior, and their soundfields seamless, and far more convincing than many of the competition out there. If I could afford a CXA5000, I'd have one in my system right now, especially as I have no intention of moving to Atmos or any other format for a few years to come yet - I'm quite happy with 5.1, and my room doesn't warrant anything bigger. I'm not keen on some of the 'auto' or 'progressive' features, but then I'm no fan of them on any manufacturer's products. Its YPAO is decent - not up there with the best, but flexible enough for most people, and it EQs down to 31Hz. I always thought Anthem's ARC was good in the way that you can set a high pass filter for EQ, and thought it was on its own in this respect, but you can go into the set up and change the EQ manually to be flat (no EQ added) from any point upwards you like. And all this via a URL on your computer or tablet.

I'm with you on Atmos. I have a high, spacious sound field in my room, due to the placement of my surrounds, with effects flying way over my head. In my situation, I can't see Atmos adding much, if anything, too the party. When I move house, and have no neighbours, I'll defo upgrade to 7.2 or 9.2 but Atmos, maybe not.

David, I just wondered how the new Yamaha CX-A5000 and MX-A5000 compare to the old flagship Yamaha DSP-Z11?

Well, it's been a while since I've heard a Z11, so it'd be a little unfair of me to give any real comparisons.

The Z11 is still a cracking amp, but things do move on. You'll find there will be some aspects of the RXA3040 that will improve upon a Z11, and the CXA5000 isn't just an RXA3040 with the amplification taken out.
