I have been looking at the Yamaha DSP-Z7, but on searching for the cheapest price i have found that i can get a Yamaha DSP-Z11 for the same price if not a bit cheaper. The only drawback is that it is an american model, I have been told it would be ok to use in the UK.

Has anyone got an american model? does it work ok on 240v or do u need to reduce the voltage?

I would still probably only use it on a 5 speaker system for now, would there still be any benfits on using this system over the Yamaha DSP-Z7? would the sound quality be better?

WARNING - As others have mentioned - stay away from US Amps that require Transformers to work.

I bought the Denon AVR-4308. Nothing but problems it has created.

1. Quality Drops (unless you have a perfect transformer - dont think there is one)

2. Transformers of that sought are generally noisy so will always create a audible hum

3. Shipping Costs & All Other Taxes WILL add up to be expensive.

4. Adding up all the costs - the difference in saving is not as much as you think...

5. Lack of Warrenty is a nightmare (had to repair my Denon 3 times so far within 18 months - and yes you have to pay for EVERYTHING)

Hi Vinny7

Good post.

All the best

Rick @ Musicraft

I calculated that shipping it from the US with taxes, P&H, step-down transformer, return shipping insurance and all that shizz adds up to about AU$5000. In Australia it lists $8000. So with a bit of discounting and bundling and free installation, the extra cost is probably worth it for peace of mind and simplicity (i.e. no pain and suffering). Plus I don't feel like I ripped of a store by demoing and not buying from them.

Hi Beta4Me, I think that the offer that Australia has got is still valid.

For $6,500.00, you can purchase a new Yamaha RX-Z11 and receive a free Yamaha Blu-ray Disc Player - I think it's model number 2900 or something like that.

If it is still available, it is an incredible deal. If you don't need the Blu-ray Player, just sell it off for like $500.00 for a quick sale and you've got yourself a top-class A/V Receiver for only AUD$6,000.00.

Several USA audio places have the Z11 for $2,000! thats £1250! which is extremely tempting even if you have to ship it over and buy a 2000w power supply.

My Question is why is it that as always British prices are through the roof! basically the same system in UK is £3,500 and in US its £1250 why?

Basically i can see 5 things that need to be considered which i can answer 3 of them but still not sure of 2 of the points. I know people will come on here especially retailers to state you must buy from a UK supplier etc etc but i just need some straight answers as to the differences between the US & UK versions and possible issues?

Remember the UK version is £3,600 and the US version is £1,250.

The 5 points i have come up with are:-

Q1 - The Power Supply?

A - This can be easily sorted with a 2000w Power Supply.

Q2 - US standard is 60hz where as UK is 50hz could this be an issue?

A - I Really don't know if this would effect it or not (Can anybody here answer this?)

Q3 - US standard format is NTSC and UK is PAL is this an issue?

A - Again I Really don't know if this would effect it or not (Can anybody here answer this?)

Q4 - Warranty?

A - Yes this is an issue if something went wrong with the machine but then again i could buy 3 US versions before i have paid for 1 UK version!

Q5 - Shipping

A - For me i could get round this as i have family living in the US whom i visit once a year so i could place an order and get it delivered to their house for free and then when i fly home i could pay the excess baggage weight of $30 and hopefully get it into the UK with no issues

I am really looking for answers to Questions 2 & 3 as you have to admit getting a Yamaha Z11 for £1250 is extremely tempting!

I found out from Sound Advice in Perth a few months ago that it was the current Yamaha Australia special.

I was on Sound Advice's web-site yesterday and it still displayed that special. However, their web-site appears to be currently down.

Their web address is http://www.soundadvice.net.au

On the bottom right of the page, you can click on the "Yamaha" link and the bottom of the Yamaha page should have the Z11 and description of the offer. It might pay to ring Sound Advice directly, to try to find out if the offer is still valid.

If it is, it should be Australia-wide, and you should be able to get the same deal from your local Yamaha retailer.

Personally, I wouldn't use an important bit of kit like this, basically the heart of your system, with a step down convertor/transformer. How the transformer performs is quite important, as has been proved by many audio companies. I think it's pointless saving money if I'm not going to get 100% from it.

I have found the answer to one of my points which is you can change the format from NSTL to PAL via the advanced menu options so now all that leaves is the frequency is there going to be a difference from 50hz to 60hz?

I understand that the step down you may loose slight performance but would it still be better than a Amp at £1200 range from the UK? i am guessing it will still be a much better performance from a Z11 using a step down transformer than an amp in the UK paying £1200.

Please note i am not trying to 'get at' our suppliers on here i am just waying up the options to find out that if it would work and if there maybe any compatibility issues

I have found an industrial 2000w step down transformer for £150 so more or less the comparison would be:-

Z11 with a step down transformer against a Z7?

Hi andytucker, i have asked your questions for you and the answers i got were,

In the advanced setup you change it from NTSC to
PAL, but that only matters for normal TV.

For Sky HD and Blu-Ray it makes no diffference.

50Hz and 60Hz makes no difference at all either.

So Really there is no reason why people can not buy a Yamaha Z11 US verison and get it working fine here in the UK for under £1500!

The UK is a more demanding market, so Yamaha leave the radio out for quality reasons. The Americans are less fussy, and would rather have more features at the expense of quality. Seeing as it has internet radio access, the analogue radio is not needed anyway.
