Just got yamaha 863 and going to connect to PS3 for playing PS3 games, DVD movies and also Blu ray Movies. All will be connected using Hdmi cables

What are the best audio settings on the ps3 to use for each individual source. I have read to use Lpcm for Bluray HD audio but is also the option for games and DVD movies.

Any help would be great

I think this is still a topic of debate.

It also depends if you want to swap output type on the menu each time you change the media you are playing. Personally I don't change it so my settings are always on LPCM out, which you need to have to get TrueHD to the amp from Blu-Ray discs.

I have heard that some people switch the output to Bitstream when they play DVD's so that the amp can decode the signal but I cant comment on any difference in quality cos I havent tried it yet.

Hi,

There's an argument for using bitstream wherever possible, based on an assumption that an AV amp will do a better job of decoding than the PS3 will. I'm not sure how true this really is though. Personally I find it hard to tell one from the other so I leave it set to LPCM out. LPCM is also (to my knowledge anyway) still the only way to get DTS Master HD out of the PS3. Not sure about Dolby True HD these days.ÿ

...or indeed any of the HD audio formats.
