Wireless surround sound

skularatna:What is the best wireless surround speakers I can buy upto £400? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Is "wireless speakers" a bit of a misnomer?

If you do have speakers that can receive a wireless signal don't you need a power supply to the speakers to drive them? Therefore this defeats the object of being wireless in the first place?

Not necessarily, since I have plugs in all my corners, but wouldn't want to have to stretch wire from an AV amp to those corners.

To the OP, I'm aware of Sony doing a wireless add-on kit (and selling wireless home cinema all-in-ones), and KEF do a wireless transmitter, but don't know if you can buy wireless speakers separately, or if those manufacturer's offerings are brand-specific. Maybe worth googling those two brands with "wireless" and seeing how far you get.

Hi, Skularatna i have the KEF wireless 5000 series, and they work perfectly. (i only use them watching dvd's) The spesker's plug in behind my sofa, and the wireless transmitter connect's to my av amp,it is alway's insink. but they do cost more than £400.

Paul.

The Sony S-AIR kits are really designed to work with Sony equipment - the transmitter fits into a slot in the back of some components, and is powered by them.

The KEF system will work with any speakers, and you can get it (minus speakers) for around £350 or so with a spot of Googlage.

Is 'speakers' a bit of a misnomer, since they're not actually capable of independent speech. Maybe 'transducers' would be more accurate.

In that case, I look forward to reading the Supertest Review of Wireless Transducers in next months mag!

Stretching speaker wire across your room changes the properties of the cable and presents a Health & Safety risk.

I recommend you buy a bit more cable and route it around the room.

Hi Skularatna

If you go onto the KEF website for the uk, on the left hand side click on products and then pick surrond sound systems. Go to wireless and click on it and you will see all KEF's wireless products. (speakers, sub- woofer, transmitter and receiver).

I have the KIT5005.2 The transmittor price ranges from about £350 to £400. You will need 2 rear speakers and receivers and these range from £200 to £300, check the internet for best prices. You have to use KEF rear speakers with their receivers for the system to work but as far I know you can use any front speakers. Check internet for all prices as they do tend to vary.

I hope this is of use. You can always phone KEF. They have a traditional telephone number and their technical department are very helpful, you actually talk to a technichan rather than someone just reading from the manual

Paul
