I have a onkyo 505 amp which i am very happy with, and have only had for about a year, and am looking for a blu-ray player, particularly the new sony bdp-s350.Would i benefit from this players hd sound,as i am aware that my amp cannot decode hd sound?

Hi there,
See the end of this thread. Since you already have your Onkyo, it's really up to you whether you want to go out and replace it after only owning it for a year. If you're curious, I'd suggest going for a demo at a decent AV dealer - then you can hear for yourself the difference and decide if it's worth the money for the upgrade.

Hi coletti,

Just a reminder - even if you went for the Sony BDP-S350 (which decodes everything apart from DTS-HD Master Audio onboard, and sends as Linear PCM via HDMI), you still won't be able to get HD audio through your current Onkyo 505 since it doesn't accept LPCM via HDMI. This Sony model doesn't have analogue multichannel outputs, so connecting it to the Onk this way isn't an option either.

As professorhat suggests above, it's up to you if you want to replace your Onk after just a year, because you will not get HD audio from it unfortunately. The Sony BDP-S350 looks like a great buy, but you won't be able to take advantage of its HD audio capabilities with your current receiver - sorry!
