Will hifi setup make good surround package?

Hello everyone,

My first post on these forums. I'm Chris.

I bought last year a simple and inexpensive setup made up of Camb. Audio S30 with the A5 amp of the same brand.

I am planning now to move on to "surround" sound. Would I be alright just adding a subwoofer for a start? Can I get anything decent for up to £300 that would work alright with the rest of my equipment?

I don't want or need my sound too loud (we also have a large fish tank in the living room and my girlfriend is worried about the "noise killing them"...).

Maybe I should have posted this under "Home Cinema"... Sorry mods. Pls move if you think it's best.

Thanks for your help

Chris

I don't think your amp has a "pre-out" for a subwoofer but I'll check for you.

Generally what you are talking about building is a 2.1 system (2 speakers and 1 subwoofer). This will enhance movies to some extent but not as much as a dedicated 5.1(5 speakers and 1 subwoofer) or even 7.1 system.

Back in a mo.

Actually the book says you can do it. You need to find an active sub woofer (one with a built in amp, you can spot them easily as they need mains power.) Connect this to the pre-out on the A5 and you have a 2.1 system. Your local Hi Fi store should be able to help you and not rip your arms off.

Thanks Welshboy.

Yes, going 2.1 was one of the possible ways to go "surround" (although it didn't hit me first).

I had initially laid out plans to upgrade my tv, and later buy a "proper" AV receiver with an adequate surround speaker package.

I'll see if I can accommodate a full 5.1 setup at home, maybe not for now though.

Thanks for your reply.

Yeah but it's not surround though, it's just stereo with a sub.ÿ
