K123,

It is generally better to have equal lengths on each side, though 4m vs 1.5 m isn't a great difference, because of tonal differneces the Impendance may make (The Amp sees the Speaker+Wire impendance together).

How much difference this really makes I don't know, and relative positions of your speakers probably make more of a different to the frequency response.

If you do decide to go for 4m for both lengths it's best not to 'coil' the extra length, instead run past the speaker and back to the speaker. Then again, it may make no difference with a properly screened cable.

That's all, -N-

I have some unequal lengths of Atlas Hyper, something like 2.5m - 0.75m and the unequal lengths are not audibly detrimental compared to equal lengths of Van Damme Blue 4mm.

thanks for those comments guys. yh it probs doesnt make a difference but will probs get the same length anyway just incase i make changes to the position of my system. i think for speaker cable i may go for atlas equater 2, and maybe some van den hul interconnects, maybe either the integration or the second. perhaps even d102 mk3 ?

Why compromise with anything less than the 6mm gauge cable? It's not as if it's expensive whatever gauge you buy and it's easy to terminate yourself with gold plated banana plugs. The 6mm gauge has the lowest resistance at 7.3 Ohms/Km and can handle the meatiest power amp outputs, especially if you bi-wire. See http://www.vdctrading.com/docs/24.pdf and my review at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Van-Damme-Professional-Series-Speaker/dp/8413113369/ref=cm_cr-mr-title.

For interconnects I use Van Damme Tour Grade Classic XKE terminated with Neutrik XLR's (silver rather than gold plated pins). The latest iteration, with slightly revised jacket material, is noticeably better than its predecessor (I bought a second pair and was surprised at how much better they sound than the pair I already had, so I had my first pair redone ~ same plugs but the newer wire). Being a pro audio cable, it's cheap so all you pay for is quality rather than something with a fancy audiophile hi-fi name on it.

Connect Audio in Slough provide excellent service at very reasonable prices to make up whatever Van Damme lead you need, using top quality silver solder (though they don't carry the full range of jacket colours, only black). If you want XLR plugs other than Neutrik or Furutech, send them yours and they'll terminate using them instead.

Connect Audio was also the only cable specialist (that I could find) able and willing to get hold of 6 pin Neutril DIN plugs to make me up a custom power umbilical between my pre-amp and its power supply (so I could site them well away from each other).

While I appreciate it is an old thread, best not to have this nonsense around for all to see - or these old wives tales last forever.

1. Speaker cables aren't screened (and even if they were, it wouldn't make any difference to an inductive effect - if there was one)

2. There is no problem with having the spare cable as a coil, the two conductors in the cable cancel out and there is no net inductive effect.

As we seem to revive a 4 year old thread (no idea why) I start at the OP question;

I wouldn't have VanDamned hanging out the back of my system's.

Pay a little more and get something decent.

Pay a little more and get something more expensive that sounds the same

Fixed that for you

Thanks but I'd rather you don't unless you you highlight it to indicate it is of your own making.

Actually, please don't change what I/someone else has written. Feel free to disagree with what has been written by any means though.

Unless your system is better than a pro studio, (Which I doubt) Van Damme will provide all that you need. (It’s better than 99.9% of the overpriced, over hyped, substandard products that are peddled by Hi Fi cable manufactures, (Who can’t even produce any substantiated evidence about their products) hence the reason it’s used in pro studios and Hi Fi cables aren’t)

You are kidding aren't you.

Considering the rubbish that comes out of many studios these days sound quality seems to come a far second to sturdiness which, after all, is the claim to fame for VanDamned.

Like I said, get decent cable instead :)

Yes give your money to your hifi dealer, all the pro stuff is rubbish.

When Studios put tenders out to equipment manufacturers I'd be very surprised if outright sound quality ranks on top of the list. Reliability and a manufacturers life time probably come first. - Hell, some Sound Engineers still use ancient monitors and headphones to mix and record. Why? No, not sound quality but its a constant they know well.

There are probably a few specialist High End Recording Studios such as Stockfish and Chesky which use better cabling.

Like I said, get decent cable instead :)

Not all of it but some thats for sure.

The term 'Pro' is probably as much abused as 'Hifi'.

It applies to cheap active chinese boxes for as little as 50 quid.

Have fun :)

Considering most cable is the same apart from the price and the name I think you are wasting your money. I bet the profit margins like most accessories is a lot higher than for the actual hifi. In tests a lot of the expensive cables don't fair any better than the cheaper ones. The rubbish music is because the mastering engineer has been instructed to compress it, that is after the recording, its nothing to do with it, its to make it loud so more people buy it for their cars or crappy $5 headphones its not produced for the hifi market which is tiny. If you compare Red Hot Chilli Peppers California which is one of the worst albums for compression with the uncompressed version you may get an idea.

Sorry to interrupt you guys, but could you help then which relatively cheap cable should I use for a Pioneer A-30 with Elac FS 147? (I don't like relaxed sound, like Van den Hul.)

VdH Skyline Hybrid :)

Its not 'relaxed' imho (I have two 1.5m lengths which I've used a while ago) and well made.

QED and Chord make cheaper cables which reportedly have a more forward effect.
