I'm lookin to purchase a new tv for around £600, I have been looking at the sony kdl40v4000 which is 1080p no 100hz and the panasonic th42px80b which is 100hz but only 720p, I watch a lot of sports but also have a ever growing collection of blu-rays, does anyone have any advice or sugestions? cheers dan

Go view the TV's.

Apologies if that seems a flippant response but honestly only your eyes can tell you which TV you prefer. The v4000 and the px80 are both excellent sets for the money but there are so many variances between them that one of them is likely to look better than the other in your eyes (and your eyes will be different to mine or anyone else's). Don't worry about the specs/resolution these are effectilvey irrelevant - just trust your eyes.

If you can, watch sports (in SD and HD) and your blu rays on both TV's, you'll soon know which one you prefer. If you don't know and you like both equally then get the one you can buy cheapest!

The PX80 is a great screen, really nice images for the money, and the sound is decent. SD pictures are good, and HD scales nicely to the HD ready panel. Also it can be picked up for much less than £600, I've seen it around for £500 which would make it a billy bargain!

Don't forget that the 100Hz on the PX80 is not the same as the 100Hz you may find on an LCD and does not help to smooth motion. If you do go for the PX80 (which will have the edge when watching sport) then you need to decide soon as the PX80 sets have been discontinued for a while and the only stock is what's left at dealers.

I would also suggest that the black/shadow levels are much better on the Panasonic, as some reviews have described the Sony's shadow performance as quite poor (decent black levels, but no detail).
